Some of my favorites:

Spartucas: The best old epic I've ever seen, and a great, yet sad, ending. Too bad Kubrick hated it. Love the music score.

2001: A Space Odysee: This sparked my interest in Kubrick's movies, and made me long for sci-fi that makes you think.

Enemy Mine: One of the most under-rated sci-fi movies of all time. Dennis Quad is one of my favorite actors, the make-up is amazing, and the plot is great too.

Watership Down: When I first saw it, I was somewhat disturbed. But this movie, I think , sparked my interest in 'serious' animation.

Steamboy: This movie is probably my favorite anime movie.

Spartacus is a great movie.

The reason why Kubrick wasn't fond of it was because it wasn't his project to start with. Producer/star Kirk Douglas bought the rights to the book, and originally hired Anthony Mann (who made some really great noir films in the 1940s, and the dark, psychological Jimmy Stewart westerns of the 1950s) to direct. Several days into shooting, Douglas and Mann had a falling out. Mann was fired, and Douglas brought in Kubrick, with whom he had worked with in Paths of Glory. Since Kubrick didn't have anything immediate on his slate, he took the job, purely as director for hire. But Douglas proved to be as controlling with Kubrick as he was with Mann. Kubrick stuck it out, finished the film, then began work on Lolita, which was his project from the ground up. From that point on, Kubrick produced and directed his own films (as he had done prior to Spartacus).

IMO, GRAB IT!

It's a great mockumentary about a fictional metal band, has great music, great lines, great characters, and features hilarious work by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer. The DVD is excellent. Lots of cool features, including a commentary by the guys in Spinal Tap character. They even offer a running commentary on the menu screen, so you may just want to listen for five or so minutes before diving into the movie. At $7.50, it's a steal, man!
