Best Movie Ever!

Katherine Hepburn as Queen Eleanor
* She is such a wonderful actress, mnominated 12 times for Oscars and winning 4 times (including one for this movie). Although I love many of her films, I think she gave the performance of her life in this film. She is the perfect foil for O'Toole's Henry II and perhaps the only actress who could've pulled off this role opposite him.

I was named after Katherine Hepburn! She's a really great actress!

My fave movies (in no particlar order):

The Birds-My fave Hitchcock film.

Phycho- My second fave Hitchcok film. Shower scene... classic. And I love the twisted ending!

Breakfast at Tiffanys- I love Aundrey Hepburn and this movie. She's an elegant lady in the film but also has a rebellious side.

Land Speed- Just a great film. Interesting ending, too!

The Blues Brothers- Surprisingly, when this film first came out, it wasn't very popular. But I really enjoyed it, yet another great car chase!

Spirited Away- A great anime, it's so strange!

Kiki's Delivery Service- Cutest film! ^.^ But it's not where I got my username from in case you're wondering...

The Empire Strikes Back- My fave Star Wars movie!

E.T.- My fave Speilburg movie!

The Party- SOOOO 60s- I love it! Peter Seller's in hilarious as the Indian guy, I still crack up when I watch the start of it!

What's Up, Doc?- Barbera Streisand is great in this ("I don't know who he is but I hate him"). I love the car-chase, too, and when the all end up in court, haha!

Da Kath & Kim- It's actually a tele-movie, but it's hilerious and is just nice light entertainment.

To Sir, With Love- LOVE this film SO much! It shows what teenagers in an inner-city school were like in the 60s. Great film...

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?- Sidney Poitier from To Sir, With Love stars in this and as usual he does a fantastic job. In the film he's going to marry a young white girl but her folks don't approve of her marrying a black man.

Hair- Haha, great movie. Though I bet the stage performance is better. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it (hippie 'ere *raises hand*), and the music is fantastic, I totally recommend the soundtrack!

Meet The Feebles- An early Peter Jackson film, he made it way before he was famous with Lord Of The Rings. It's puppets, but they're twisted, off-beat and crude. Nice film!

American Graffiti- Even this film was made in a very short time, I still love it. And the music is great as well, I have all of the American Graffiti records that came out in the early 70s!

Muppet Treasure Island- My fave Muppet film!

Ferris Bueller's Day Off- DUDE! I love this movie! It stars a young Matthew Broderwick.I don't think this film will ever get old. Bueller...? Bueller...? Bueller...? Priceless!

Yeah, the stage version of Hair is quite different, but the movie is good, too (I played Claude when we did the show in college).

What's Up, Doc? is one of my all-time faves too! Nobody that I recommend the film to has ever heard of it before! They're like, "is that with Bugs Bunny or something?"

And American Graffiti...one of my top 10 favorite films of all time! I consider it the best thing George Lucas has ever done.

I love movies so much, I'll probably visit this thread all the time to talk about them, but first things first.. the best ever

The best movie ever is The Lion in Winter from 1968, directed by Anthony Harvey. It's probably the best-written movie ever, certainly the wittiest, with very sharp dialogue and the best one-liners in movie history. The Oscar-winning screenplay was written by James Goldman, based upon his own broadway play. Interestingly enough, the play was a flop until after the movie revived interest in it. John Barry's score also won an Oscar. And for all you history buffs out there, outside of a few anachronisms, the story is very historically accurate. And great drama besides. But I've always thought of it as a comedy first.


Plot: It's Christmastime 1183. England's King Henry II plans to soon name his heir (due to the death of his eldest son the previous summer). He invites his family and the King of France to a Christmas court at Chinon Castle in Anjou (a province in present-day France that was the center of Henry's empire). And what a cast of characters they are.. the most dysfunctional family in history... his wife, Queen Eleanor, imprisoned for "leading too many civil wars" against him... his mistress, Princess Alais (of France).... his three sons: Richard, Geoffrey, and John, all of whom want to be king.... and the young King Philip of France (also Alais' brother).. each spin their own webs of treachery and deceit as the story unfolds. And plot twists and schemes abound.


So, take a wonderful script and add one of the best casts ever assembled:
Peter O'Toole as King Henry II
* It's no coincidence that he's my favorite actor. Although I've seen a recent list that claims his portrayal of T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia was the best acting performace ever captured on film, I have to disagree.. for me, this is his best performance. The energy he brings to the role is unmatched.. and yet, it's a controlled energy. He knows exactly when and how to unleash the full force of Henry's personality. How this performance did not win an Oscar (a common theme in O'Toole's career) is beyond me.

Hey Randall, I'm sure you know this (as an O'Toole fan), but Becket was released last month on DVD.

(and while it's certainly not in the same league as Lawrence or Lion, I enjoyed O'Toole's work in What's New, Pussycat? The scene between him and Richard Burton (his co-star in Becket) is great!

BTW, my favorite O'Toole film is probably The Ruling Class. Great performance!
