Yeah - some of those kids' show hosts of the 50s could be mean-spirited off camera. Did you ever hear the story about that one host, who, when he thought the cameras were off, said "That oughta hold the little (deleted)'s for another week." But the cameras were still rolling...
Anyway...it's true, the book said that Scooter was the most representative of Richard's soul because Scooter's the one running around, trying to keep order backstage - and it's Scooter who's leading everyone off in "Just One Person" during Jim's memorial.
It seems that Richard was a role model for his brother and sisters, and it seems that he was always concerned about security and comfort for his family back home - and this extended to friends, co-workers and even total strangers.
And you're right about the "Tears of a Clown" syndrome; even the most cheerful, witty person has a sad side, since we're all human, and Richard was no exception.
I'll bet that the years in London were really thrilling ones for Richard - after all, there he is, performing major speaking parts on television, after years of doing just right hands on SS. Plus, there's the thrill of getting to travel the world, of course, and getting to meet new people.
