You know I forget which episode it was, maybe it was Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, where a horse shoe throwing contest was taking place. Chaos ensues, at which point a Whatnot Muppet with a distinctly "Forgetful" voice comes on (if you get me hehe) and says in a rather cheeky way, "Oh yeeeah I forgot to take the shoes off the horses! Aw shucks, yeah I sure am stupid! Lol"

Sort of interesting, lol, I remember Kevin Clash saying Richard initially thought the character of Forgetful Jones was "too stupid." This Muppet Show episode was way before Richard took over Forgetful Jones (at least according to Muppet Wiki). Yet he already seemed to have an em...opinion about the stupidity of this forgetful character, lol.

But yet, even Richard may have had a distate in the bumbling cowboy, who could forget Forgetful Jones once Richard had begun to perform him?

See now that's the sign of a good actor! When an audience loves a character even when the performer doesn't! Lol

Yay! And Kevin said it was after that Oklahoma sketch that Richard warmed up to the character. What I notice is that in this sketch, Forgetful's a bit more prima donna and defensive about the forgetting, which is what Richard seemed to enjoy doing more in general. Rather than being all "Aw shucks!"

But evidently they reached some sort of compromise regarding the character. I was just on that Sesamestreet.org site and saw possibly the most sweet and wonderful Forgetful sketch of all time! I know not everyone can see it, so I'll try to describe it:

Forgetful is playing guitar and looks to the sky saying, "Aw Gene Autrey I can never forget you!" Then his girlfriend Clementine comes in, all upset because Forgetful forgot to pick her up at her place.

F: But I don't even know where you live!

C: Oh sure you do Forgetful, you just forgot!... ::rather bitterly:: Like you always do...

This next part genuinely cracked me up:

F: What were we supposed to do today?

C: Today's a very special day...

F: OHHHHH! How could I forget! It's our anniversary!

C: ...Forgetful.....We're not married!

But for the most part the sketch's tone is sort of sad, but sweet.

C: I know you forget everything but...sometimes I feel kinda sad about it...It's as though...it's as though you don't give a hoot about poor ole Clementine...

F: Oh...but but but Clementine you're wrong about that! Now you just listen. I wanna sing a song about...about how I feel about you...

I can't remember the street where you live. Your name, Lea-number, my mind's like a sieve. I know my forgetting is hard to forgive, but I'll always remember I love you. It's true, Clemie. It's true...you gotta believe me.

C: Oh sweet talking man you!

F: How I regret that the day that we met is one of those things I will always forget.

C: ::whimper::

F: Our precious past, well, it fades mighty fast. But my love for you is the kind that will last.

C: Oooo!

F: Oh I can't remember the date of your birth, the size of your feet or your height or your girth. But oh my sweet for whatever it's worth, I'll always remember I love...I mean it, I really do...I love you.

C: Oh Forgetful, that's the nicest birthday present a girl could ever have.

F: BIRTHDAY? ! Now I remember what I got this box for! Woohoo!

C: Oh, it must be a present!

F: No... :: opens box to reveal a cake, a bottle, two glasses and a balloon:: It's a party! Happy Birthday, Clementine!

C: Oh Forgetful I'm...I'm speechless!

F: Ohhh gosh...

::Clementine kisses him::

F: Ohhh weee!

Oh, yeah, I remember seeing that one back in the day, when I was a little kid. I remember Kermit showing the clapboard to Forgetful Jones, and clearly stating that it was "O - klahoma." And down below, there's Jim and Richard going through the motions, while Kevin and David, and everyone else within earshot, are laughing their collective heads off.

And it's a shame that Natalie Cole couldn't come on the show and sing "Unforgettable" with Forgetful (and Richard). That would have made for a really swell spot on the show, and I think Richard would have been over the moon about it.

Looking at that exchange between Forgetful and Clementine, you've really got to admire Clementine, for having a lot of patience with Forgetful. And I love that line, "Aw, Gene Autry, I can never forget you." I'll bet that was thrown in for the adults watching.

MuppetNewsgirl, if you missed it, I think you'd really enjoy my descripton of a FJ sketch I just saw (posted above). I know you said you can't see the SesameStreet.org clips so I made an attempt to describe it. :smile:
