While most may remember Ed Asner as Lou Grant from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, I'll remember him moreso as the voice of Santa Claus in Olive the Other Reindeer and J. Jonah Jameson from the 1990's Spider-Man animated series.

As for his role as Lou Grant, I have this memory of him leading a group of military infiltrators set to liberate Mary from her syndicated sitcom life in an SNL parody sketch from the mid-1980's.

Interestingly enough, he was scheduled to be in town later this fall for the Knoxville Fanboy Expo, and I was considering meeting him.

Still a sad loss, though. I think my first exposure to him was when he voiced Cosgrove on FREAKAZOID! I remember an interview with Paul Rugg saying that when they heard Asner just simply reading over the material in that deadpan manner, they felt that's exactly what Cosgrove should sound like, to which he asked, "What, you don't want me to act this?"

Wow. Even Ed Asner's death isn't immune from being politicized from those out there who apparently take issue with the activism he's been involved with throughout his career to the point they feel the need to label him a Socialist because of it.

To be honest that’s the thing with celebrity deaths. People like to take advantage of their deaths and make these negative statements and false accusations. Look what happened with Stan Lee after his passing. Immediate sexual accusations.
