Plot: Letter Xs go on strike

SCENE 1: Big Bird welcomes the viewers. Forgetful Jones has a problem on his hands - he cannot remember what letter to give his partner for her birthday. As Big Bird helps him identify the letter, he becomes frustrated and responds "Oh, boy…" and now Forgetful Jones remembers what letter to give his parther: the letter O. Jones thanks Big Bird for reminding him, but Big Bird said to himself "What did I say?"

Cartoon: Letter O limerick

Muppets: An Anything Muppet mechanic re-inflates the letters in the word BUS.

Film: Word Showcases -- A male voiceover lists a plethora of words starting with O.

Cast: Luis portrays Captain Under-Wonder, who demonstrates "under", but the last item to go under is the tire, so he shrinks himself down to fit under the tire.

Cartoon: Alphabet chain reaction.

Cartoon: A spring bounces over and under animals and other objects.

Muppets: "(I Can't Get No) Cooperation"

SCENE 2: Gordon and the kids are playing basketball, while Oscar and his Grouchketeers are interrupting the game. Gordon teaches Oscar and his Grouchketeers the importance of not interrupting others. Oscar respects Gordon's wishes and they now march into Hooper's Store and give the merchant a hard time.

Cartoon: The Ringmaster and his four lordly lions.

Muppets: Four Muppet cheerleaders give four big cheers for the number four.

Film: Ospray (music by Joe Raposo)

Celebrity: Bill Cosby and his duplicate count to 20 one by one.

Cartoon: Donnie Budd sings a tune about four lions.

Film: Bus trip, with guitar-rhythm background music.

Cartoon: The word BUS

Muppets: Bruce Stringbean and the S Street Band's song, "Born to Add"

Transition: David spots a square in space, and the kids count its sides.

SCENE 3: Cookie Monster enters Mr. Hooper's store so he could have a sandwich. Hooper is very impressed, assuming Cookie Monster is starting to eat healthy for once in his life, and explains the benefits of healthy eating. But apparently, Cookie Monster informs the merchant that he wants a cookie sandwich.

Film/Song: "At the Animal Doctor"

Cartoon: The Hummingbird (art by Bruce Cayard)

Muppets: Ernie and Bert -- Ernie imagines what would happen if Bert was to step on a roller skate that Bert tells Ernie to put away - could Bert slide out the door, and fetch him an ice cream cone along the way?

Film: Bank tellers and the equipment they use.

SCENE 4: Big Bird discovers several letter Xs on strike, holding picket signs, and will not return to the alphabet until they get appreciated again. Maria approaches the striking Xs, and explains to them that the letter X is appreciated, but very few words start with X, hence the reason for the strike. The Xs are also fighting against something that contains an X: TAXES.

Cartoon: Poverty Pictures skits -- A peanut-shaped guy names words that end with X, since very few words start with X.

Muppets: Harvey Kneeslapper -- "X Marks the Spot!"

Cartoon: The Great Alfonzo shows off his trained Xs.

Film: Kids are seen dancing

Cartoon: Christopher Clumsy talks about feet and what they can do.

Muppets: Grover the Waiter -- Mr. Johnson orders soup and a sandwich, and says that he wants the sandwich before the soup. When Grover delivers the sandwich, Mr. Johnson abruptly decided he wants the soup first. When Grover delivers the soup, Mr. Johnson changes his mind and wants the sandwich first. Grover ends up giving Mr. Johnson both items, so he can decide what to eat first. The irate customer tells Grover that he now wants a cup of coffee, then the soup and the sandwich.

Cartoon: Xs appear in the sky over a black background.

Cartoon: 30-Dot Bridge #2

SCENE 5: Bob tries to convince the Xs to settle their strike, explaining to him that he is unable to spell any words on his own. He also explains that Xs are also important, especially since it is used in Tic-Tac-Toe. Maria also informs the Xs that they are used in more words they realize, such as SIX, OX, TEXTURE, EXCITING and many others. The Xs then realize their wrongdoing and decide to settle the strike, and return to their job, but not without feeling EXHAUSTED. David announces the sponsors: O. X and 4. The Friday credit roll follows.

Film: While on the beach, a percussion musician discusses how rhythm is everywhere, such as in breaking waves, walking, and horses galloping.

Cartoon: A song about a rolling O. (John and Faith Hubley animation)

Muppets: Ah, for the Joys of the Countryside, sung by an Anything Muppet baritone (voiced by Jim Henson). The song expresses his pleasure for the countryside, and learns that it is being converted into a city.

Cartoon: Sand Letters -- O/o (Two figures toss an O back and forth)

Song: What's It Like To Be in School?, a song about a child's first day in kindergarten.

Cartoon: Olga y la letra O

SCENE 2: Oscar, along with several kids, are waiting for the school bus. When they board the school bus and travel to school, Oscar is displeased when the ride is so quiet, as he prefers the loud sounds the bus makes more.

Film: A scuba diver demonstrates "away from".

Muppets: Alphabet Chat -- Mr. Chatterly tries to discuss the letter O and the many words it starts, but things get out of control and the set gets taken down, ending the show prematurely.

Cartoon: Kids wander through the word OPEN, and there is a party happening inside.

Celebrity: Richard Pryor recites the alphabet in a humorous but clean way.

Animation: The word SALIDA spins around.

Cartoon: Among the numbers 1 through 12, a moving truck takes a number 8 and drives off.

Muppets: Eight Beautiful Notes, sung by Count Von Count using his organ.

Cartoon: A girl draws a self-portrait of her entire body. (Bruce Cayard animation)

Muppets: Ernie and Bert -- The two decide to use both Bert's canvas and Ernie's paints to paint a picture of something. Bert wants to paint a bowl of oatmeal, but Ernie wants to paint a purple monster. They decide to cooperate by painting a purple monster eating a bowl of oatmeal.

Cartoon: Pinball Number Count -- The Number 8

SCENE 3: Oscar enters school for the first time, and he is introduced to Mrs. Morris, his teacher. He says nasty things about school, much to the teacher's shock, but he is willing to leave an apple on her desk - a rotten apple.

Cartoon: A penguin mimicks the rhythms of sounds of a drum, door knocking, a saw and a typewriter, it hears.

Muppets/Cast: Bob, and Anything Muppets portraying an oil man (voiced by Richard Hunt) and a street cleaner (voiced by Frank Oz) sing "The People in Your Neighborhood".
Film: Footage of pelicans swimming and flying.


Cartoon: A boy uses blocks to build a house, and the girl builds a Victorian house. The boy calls her a copycat as a result.

Song: Hippopotamus Round, sung by Joe Raposo.

Cartoon: Tiger of the comics loves going to school.

Muppets: Harvey Kneeslapper, as a salesperson, asks Tony if he gets attacked by monsters and run over by crowds. Herry Monster attacks him and a crowd walks all over him, so the answer is yes. Harvey has the solution to Tony's problem: AWAY FROM! The next time those things happen, Tony can get AWAY FROM them.

Animation: An off-camera David spots a triangle zooming in through outer space, and the kids count its sides.

Film: Stacy's eye exam at an optometrist's office, and she receives a new pair of glasses.

Cast: J is for JUGGLE, which Bob demonstrates.

Cartoon: Jughead Jones tells a story about a bad experience he had, which include words starting with J.

Muppets: News Flash -- Kermit interviews about Hickory Dickory Dock, and the mouse refuses to go up the clock. But a horse wants to go through the grandfather clock, and succeeds by crashing it. Talk about killing time!

Song: What Do People Do All Day?, a song which showcases various activities and occupations done in a big city on an average day.

SCENE 4: Mrs. Morris is teaching math class, and Oscar seems to be disinterested in it, until she teaches about subtraction, and when teh school bell rings, he subtracts the number of students in the classroom leaving from the number of students in the classroom, not including Oscar, in which the result is one.

Plot: Big Bird's insomnia

SCENE 1: Maria welcomes the viewers, and wants to talk about things she loves that are big and little. She points out things that are little that she loves, and then shifts focus to big things she loves, ending with Big Bird.

Cartoon: A limerick about the journey of a letter V.

Muppets: Herry Monster is holding a "NO" sign, and informs Ernie that he can make him read his sign. Ernie responds "Oh no you can't!", and he then tries it on Bert, but backfires on Ernie when Bert bets he can get Ernie to read the sign

Cartoon: Two guys (one named Virgil Veep) stand on top of each end of the letter V and talk about the letter V.

Muppets: Four monsters, including an early Elmo, sing "We Are All Monsters."

Cartoon: Snacks on Parade -- The Raisin (Animation by Bruce Cayard)

Film: Elephants in the zoo.

Muppets: Herbert Birdsfoot has Grover count three blocks, and no matter how they are arranged, they are still three blocks. Herbert then has Grover count oranges, but Grover claims he doesn't know how.

SCENE 2: Big Bird is in his nest, to talk about imagination. He imagines being a stock clerk, a firefighter, a basketball player, and even the President of the United States - though he realizes the latter involves too much work, and would settle with the other three. There is one problem: He cannot decide which one to pick.

Cartoon: Consonant Sound -- J, Jaguar (with 12 puzzle pieces fading in one by one)

SCENE 3: Grover and Telly are fighting over which TV show to watch. Olivia comes over, and recommends that Grover watch his show, and Telly watch his show when it comes on again. Grover decides to let Telly watch his show, after realizing that Grover's favorite show is pre-empted in favor of a crummy TV special.

Cartoon: A mouse tries searching for his pet, describing to his friend what they did yesterday.

Muppets: An Anything Muppet boy sings a riddle "As I Was Going To St. Ives" and a girl has to do the math. The result astonishes the boy.

Cartoon: A red man tries to pick apples from a tree by himself, while a yellow man builds a ladder.

Song: "Trying and Trying Again", with Joe Raposo on vocals.

Cartoon: "Seven Sweet Sopranos" are all on a shaky piano.

Muppets: Ernie and Bert -- Ernie's Barber Shop. Ernie starts up a barbershop business, which Bert claims is stupid. Ernie ends up cutting all of Bert's hair off, and Bert is bald as a result! Since it will take a full month to grow his hair back, Ernie suggests reading a book to pass the time away.

Cartoon: Christopher Clumsy demonstrates several shapes.

SCENE 4: At night, Big Bird is having trouble falling asleep, and Maria, Luis, Gordon and David offer several ideas to help him fall asleep. Their suggestions failed, and they don't know what to do at this point.

Film: Parts of a flower are shown in film footage. (featuring Vivaldi's Concerto for lute, 2 violins and continuo in D Major II - Largo as background music)

Muppets: "Adding", sung by a long-haired Anything Muppet hippie voiced by Jerry Nelson, demonstrating adding cookies. Not surprisingly, Cookie Monster comes in and sings "Subtracting" and eats all the cookies.

Cartoon: A man blows seven bubbles.

Film: Lions walk down a trail. (Joe Raposo background music)

Muppets: Muppet and Kid Moment -- Herry Monster asks John-John if he understands the difference between up and down.

Cartoon: 30-Dot Bridge -- Last dot shows up early.

SCENE 5: Big Bird still had trouble falling asleep, until the street becomes very quiet, and Big Bird naturally dozed off because of the very quiet neighborhood. Unfortunately, his loud sleeping sounds are now keeping Snuffy awake. Bob whispers the sponsors as the end of the nighttime version of the closing theme plays in the background.

SCENE 1: Forgetful Jones welcomes the viewers, and having a hard time remembering the first letter of the alphabet. Gordon, Olivia, David and Maria show pictures of an apple, an ape, an airplane, and an apricot respectively, as clues. Forgetful still doesn't remember, and Olivia is frustrated, saying "You don't seem to remember anything, eh?" Forgetful Jones abruptly remembered the letter A, and thanks Olivia for her help.

Cartoon: Poverty Pictures -- A man explains words starting with A, ending with avalanche and ambulance.

Muppets: Harvey Kneeslapper -- "Do you have an A on ya?"

Film: Animal Films -- Rattlesnake

Celebrity: The Fonz finishes playing pinball, and then has a message: A!

Film: A man rides his kayak and spins in circles. (Joe Raposo background music)

SCENE 2: Telly wants something square-shaped to eat at Hooper's Store. Hooper offers a square-shaped cracker, a square piece of cheese, and a square-shaped cookie. Much to no surprise, Cookie Monster rushes in and wants the cookie. Telly is not pleased about what he is offered, and wants to be shown more. Hooper has given up because he has to get ready for an event - square dancing.

Cartoon: The Typewriter skit -- A, Airplane

Muppets: Kermit uses his "magic finger" to draws a square on-screen.

Film: A closeup of an EXIT sign is shown.

Cartoon: A bird flying through the sky transforms into a plane, then a car, a cat, a fish, a submarine, a superhero named Submarine Man, and finally back to a bird. (Vince Collins art)

Song: "Weaver Bird", sung by Joe Raposo.

Muppets: Ernie has purchased seven balloons, all arranged in a circular motif, and he tries to count them, but loses track on two attempts. Grover comes in and knows a surefire way to count them - he pops six of the balloons, and the last remaining balloon carries Grover away. "I had seven...", a disappointed Ernie declares.

Cartoon: A song about a lumberjack named Max, who chops down trees. One tree is revealed to be a magic genie, who turns Max into a tree for a year. Max soon grows respect for trees and once returns to human form, and promises to never chop down trees again.

Insert: C3PO observes R2-D2 developing a crush on a fire hydrant.

Cartoon: A hippo living in the country, and prefers the quiet envirnoment, is disturbed when a mouse, who likes loudness, moves in. (Jeff Hale art)

Muppets: Kermit's Lectures -- Grover shows off his ability to touch his nose five times with his toes. Kermit then attempts it and gets hurt in the process!

Cartoon: Five firefighters put out a number 5 which is ablaze.

Muppets: Roosevelt Franklin and his song about the days of the week.

Film: Flamingos (background music by Joe Raposo)

Cartoon: 5 Song (twinkles, candles, horses, etc.)

Muppets: Little Chrissy and the Alphabeats perform the song "Exit" as the audience exits the room.

Cartoon: Batman and Robin teach a lesson about the importance of using the crosswalk while they try to capture the Joker who robbed a bank and jaywalked.

Muppets/Cast: "The People In Your Neighborhood" -- with Maria, and Anything Muppets portraying a painter (voiced by Olga Felgemacher) and a milkman (voiced by Jim Henson).

SCENE 3: The Amazing Mumford appears in a puff of smoke, and wants to fix the problem. He uses his magic spell, but instead turns Maria into a hot dog. He then turns David into a clone of Barkley. He successfully uses his magic spell to clean Barkley instantly. But Maria and David want to be turned back to human form, but Mumford doesn't know how, and has to go home and find a solution.

Cartoon: A man tries to recite the alphabet and gets interrupted by another man (voiced by Jim Thurman). (Cliff Roberts animation)

Muppets: Grover's rowboat (Part 1) -- Grover is on one side of the boat, and three monsters are on the other side, and the boat sinks.

Cartoon: A girl draws a letter A, and then an apple.

Muppets: Grover's rowboat (Part 2) -- Grover and the three monsters switch places, and the boat sinks on the other side.

Cartoon: The host of "These Are Your Parts" interviews a hand.

Muppets: Grover's rowboat (Part 3) -- Grover and the monsters are now in the center of the boat, and successfully stays afloat, and they sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" as they paddle out to sea.

Cartoon: Gerald's dog, Sparky, pretends he's an alligator, and scares Gerald while he's in bed.

Muppets: Ernie & Bert -- Ernie mimicks a dog and a duck. Bert then mimicks a train, and does it well enough that a train conductor and passengers come through the apartment.

SCENE 4: Maria and David are still a weiner and a Barkley clone and wonder what's keeping Mumford. The magician returns in a puff of smoke, and has found the solution. He uses different magic spell, and instead of turning Maria and David back to human form, Maria is now the Barkley clone, and David is now the frankfurter. He tries the magic spell one more time, and it did successfully transform Maria and David back to human form again, but Maria now speaks in David's voice, and David speaks in Maria's voice. Mumford felt he is on the right track, so he does one final spell, and it did successfully get the two adults back to their normal human form. Mumford decides to disappear in a cloud of smoke out of fear that his credibility may be impacted.

In light of the media frenzy about the coronavirus as of lately, I thought I'd post this old school outline of mine for the occasion.

Episode 14
Plot: Big Bird believes he has caught the Bird Flu
Sponsors: M, N, 9

SCENE 1: Bob welcomes the viewers, and mentions it is a very important day, until he hears Big Bird sneezing. Bob comes to Big Bird's nest and investigates why. Big Bird claims he got the bird flu, after hearing people talk about it. Bob tries to tell Big Bird he has just a normal flu, and the bird flu is more serious. Despite Bob's discussion, Big Bird insists he doesn't believe it.

Cartoon: "The Story of Nancy the Nanny Goat" (art by Tee Collins)

Muppets: An Anything Muppet boy named Charlie is lost, and a police officer tries to help him.

Film: Word Showcases -- The letter N is nice.

Cartoon: Consonant Sound -- N, Nose (Jeff Hale animation)

Muppets: Grover watches Ernie demonstrate his M/N machine.

Film: Future careers -- Film footage of various children acting out certain jobs, followed by brief footage of adults doing the real thing, and alternating.

SCENE 2: Big Bird tries every old fashioned remedy offered by Maria, David, Mr. Hooper, and Luis, to get better soon, and fails every time. Oscar chimes in a suggests a bath - a mud bath.

Cast: No matter how nine people are arranged, they are still the same nine people.

Animation: Three STOPs flash around in different colors with a female voiceover and a siren-like sound, then merge to form one STOP.

SCENE 3: Big Bird is offered a bowl of chicken soup, but he refuses, claiming it will worsen his bird flu, since chicken is a type of bird. Olivia recommends one solution -- a trip to the doctor's office. Big Bird is afraid at first, but Olivia asks Big Bird and the viewers to watch the next film coming up.

Film: A visit to the pediatrician. (Joe Raposo background music)

SCENE 3a: After the film, Big Bird feels more comfortable now, and Olivia and Gordon drive Big Bird to the doctor's office.

Muppets: "The Ten Commandments of Health"

Cartoon: The story of "The Old Woman Who Lived in a Nine" (Art by Bud Luckey)

Song: Fred Wardenburg sings "Cow Dog Song"

Cartoon: A boy uses blocks to build a house, but a girl builds a Victorian house, and the boy calls her a copycat.

Muppets: Various monsters sing "In and Out Fever" going in and out of a disco.

Film: A violinist performs off-key and the conductor orders him to STOP. He obliges, and is then told to go.

Celebrity: Bill Cosby and his clone count to 20 one by one.

Animation: David, off-camera, spots a square in space.

SCENE 4: Big Bird wants to get better soon, and the doctor tries every attempt to get him better, but Big Bird refuses. The doctor gave one final solution -- sleep. Big Bird initially claims it doesn't work, until a passerby plays a lullaby, which successfully put Big Bird to sleep, but the doctor doesn't understand the source of the music.

SCENE 5: The next morning, Big Bird wakes up, and feels much better now, and wants to play with Snuffy, but he refuses. When Big Bird asked why, he mentioned he's now got the Snuffy flu and blew his trunk to the extent of producing gale force winds, blowing Big Bird away. Bob announces the sponsors.

When he finally gets some relief, Big Bird comes in and complains that he forgot to add whipped cream to his birdseed milkshake.

Film: Kids try to break open a pinata at a party.

Cartoon: To funky background music, flip panels display WALK, and the various ways people and animals walk.

SCENE 3: Oscar is having a rotten day (as always), but then Telly is very nervous (as always). Telly asks Oscar to help him overcome his fear, but Oscar refuses to help. Telly insists he needs help, but Oscar ultimately yells at Telly, causing him even more fear.

Cartoon: Jughead Jones (voiced by Howard Morris) explains a bad experience he had using words beginning with J.

Muppets: Muppet & Kid Moment -- Grover and discuss up and down.

Cartoon: Speech Balloon skit -- J, Jam

SCENE 4: Telly can't seem to get over his fear of Oscar. Olivia comes over and tries to find out what it is about Oscar that caused Telly to be afraid. Telly mentioned that he is afraid of Oscar's yelling. The problem is resolved, but when Oscar tells him off, Telly yells at him back as a means of retaliation, causing Oscar to groan, go back into his trash can and close the lid. Maria announces the sponsors, and the Friday credit roll follows.

Plot: Biff writes a story

SCENE 1: Big Bird welcomes the viewers, and overhears Bob and Linda talking about a ball, leading Big Bird to believe that Bob is referring to a certain round object. Bob clarifies to Big Bird that he and Linda are going to a ball, a formal dance - Bob's niece's senior prom, to be exact.

Cartoon: A bully recites the alphabet to a very gentle gardener, who hits him in the bully’s face with a pie at the end.

Muppets: Lefty tries to sell Ernie a scale.

Film: Otter (Background music: Joe Raposo)

Cartoon: An elderly woman, voiced by Joan Gerber, demonstrates the letter H with a horseshoe.

SCENE 2: At Hooper’s Store, Mr. Hooper has put up a help wanted sign, looking to hire someone to count inventory. Needless to say, the Count is very interested in the job, and takes advantage of the job by counting not only the inventory, but also the props and the customers!

Mr. Hooper sells a donut for a dime; Barkley, a dog, comes running through the street; and David delivers a daisy, daffodil and dandelion to Maria, and also illustrates himself. Oscar chimes in with two negative D words: dreadful and dreary. When Olivia asks Oscar if he has even anything that starts with D, he shows off a jar of dirt, in which Olivia uses a D word to describe it – disgusting.

Muppets: Muppet food items in an Anything Muppet girl’s fridge argue on who she should eat, and end up cooperating to make a sandwich.

SCENE 4: Biff and sully are on their lunch break and eat lunch together. The food that Sully is eating inspires the idea of a story which he decides to write. He writes a story about a monster who stole someone’s sandwich and ate it. Out of nowhere, Cookie Monster devours Sully’s sandwich while Biff continues to write the story. Sully is devastated and decides to buy a new sandwich – but the return to work whistle blows and Biff has nearly completed his story but the two have to return to work with the story yet to be completed.

Cartoon: Billy Jo Jive – “The Case of the Missing Guitar Strings”

SCENE 5: Biff has nearly finished creating his story and he reads it to Sully. In the story, a monster has eaten another person’s sandwich, but Sully is badly reminded of the incident during lunch break. Biff continues reading his story, but Sully tries to get Biff to stop – failing every time. After Biff finished his story, he asks Sully what he thinks of it. Sully doesn’t say a word, and Biff is left speechless. Maria announces the sponsors.
