Another factor that's holding Biden back, after eight years of being Obama's running mate, Obama has not given him any support.
However, Biden was aligned to be the most moderate of all Democrats. Whoever Obama endorses will have an edge. Whether it's enough to defeat Trump is anybody's guess.

IMHO I don't think President Obama will endorse any single candidate until there is a clear favorite and it is all but determined. It would look bad on his record if he endorses a candidate and that candidate fails to get the nomination. I also think the Democrats don't want to risk that their chosen candidate didn't get the endorsement of their party leader. It would give ammunition to the Republicans.
