Eye exam in the morning; then several hours this afternoon continuing prep in our garden plot. I pulled weeds (dandelions apparently think they're carrots), helped install some edging along one border, squeed over finding a tiny toad, and lugged bucket after bucket of mulch and spread it over the plot. (And every time I piled it into the bucket for another trip, my brain was yelling Mulch Mulch Mulch!)

Went to a Brian Wilson concert tonight as he does he farewell tour of his Pet Sounds album. While Brian himself my not exactly be able to carry a tune quite like he used to, the rest of the Beach Boys still got it!

Went to a Brian Wilson concert tonight as he does he farewell tour of his Pet Sounds album. While Brian himself my not exactly be able to carry a tune quite like he used to, the rest of the Beach Boys still got it!

I'm so proud of Brian Wilson still coming around after he's lived through Hades and back.

"Smile" is still one of the greatest musical achievements ever. Only took four decades to come together.
He could've been a contender. For a while in 1965-66, Brian Wilson was one of the creative 60's geniuses, along with the Beatles, the Byrds, Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, who were taking pop to a new level.
Between him and the Beatles, every few months they raised the bar.
First the Beatles' Rubber Soul.
Then the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.
Then the Beatles' Revolver.
Followed by the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations", voted one of the top singles of all time. The song is a masterpiece, and was just a sample of what Wilson was coming up with for "Smile".

Then the Beatles blew everybody away, first with "Strawberry Fields"/"Penny Lane", followed by their Sgt. Pepper album. Poor Brian knew he could never top that, and went to bed for two years. What he had completed for "Smile" up to that point got released as fragments over the next few Beach Boys albums, but his momentum was shattered.
The rest of the Beach Boys hit the road as an oldies act, and Brian stayed in bed.
