I can't help blame 4Kids' terrible business sense for that one not being as successful as it should have been. There were all these grand plans of toylines and making Kirby the next Pikachu that went nowhere. F Zero, however, I don't think anyone could have made that look good. No matter who dubbed it, it just wasn't that good a show.Don't forget Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, although that was good though.
But yeah. Unless you count still on for kindergarteners in its native Japan Pokemon, Kirby was the last Nintendo cartoon period.
I get that Nintendo is protective enough of its characters to not license them out for outside media (other than cameos in movies about games) to the point where they bought the rights to porno parodies of the movie to hide it away from the public forever (shoulda done it with the actual movie instead). But SMB the movie was over 20 years ago. Video Games are no longer the strange, mystifying thing to anyone over the age of 12 anymore. They're since merged into pop culture to the extent that every freaking cartoon references video games to the point where something like Breadwinners looks like a video game. Everyone since that awkward generation of odd cartoon adaptions that works in the field of entertainment grew up playing the things, and have that big a handle on them that some of them even reference Internet Memes based on the games. Look at how successful the Resident Evil series got. It's to the point where it boarders on Adaption Displacement.
The time for a Mario project, even as simple as a comic book, has come.
