Whatever happened to Herbert Birdsfoot?

Herbert Birdsfoot was the lavender-colored anything muppet that wore glasses and was played by Jerry Nelson. He was shown on Sesame Street in the 70's and appeared on SS tracks on old SS records and old SS books from the 70's, but when Sesame Street changed the new format, he disappeared. Why did they got rid of him? Is it because nobody liked him anymore?

I think he didn't mix up well with the other characters. He was an adult, wasn't he?
