...Amateur Radio Field Day that is!

As some of you may know, I hold a Technician class license from the FCC - for you non USians, that is the federal agency that handles communication policy for the US and territories. Canadians call it "Industry Canada" etc...

Anyway, one of the major purposes of the Amateur Radio service is emercency communications in times of disaster - like on 9/11, and the recent hurricanes in Florida. This weekend, I, as well as other members of my local radio club, will be participating in the ARRL Field Day - a "Dry Run" for us to setup and operate an emergency radio site for 24 hours.

Don't get me wrong - it's not all work, work, work - we have lots of fun too - many people participate and try out new gear, work together to try out different things, etc, as well as socailaze and have fun.

The other part of Field Day is to get the public more aware of Amateur Radio - that is, we have to publicize the event, we try to set up in a public location etc. If you have some free time this Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, find your local radio club's Field Day site and check it out!

For more info about the radio club I'm in, check out http://www.w1wqm.org or for more info about Ham radio in general, visit http://www.arrl.org

Look for pictures, and stories etc after it's all over!
