I've seen many threads about how to set up monitors and sound for practicing puppetry, and I was wondering about using a webcam and a gamer's chat headset as a practice setup. I've played with my webcam at home, and except for having to slow down gestures so that they don't appear as a blur, it seems like it would work pretty well. Videos recorded off of it seem pretty natural. Any thoughts?

A lot of puppeteers are using set-ups like this on sites like BlogTV for webcasting. I think the only drawback is that many (most?) webcams give you a mirror, rather than reverse image (more about that subject here).
