Anyone remember Rainbow? I guess you have to be from the UK to really appreciate it!! It was the most superb show ever!! With the exception of about 800 different shows, but still! My favourite was George, the fabulous pink hippo!!

I actually cant stand it now... I dont think I liked it too much back then either. My standards were raised to high levels by The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street.

Most of the shows I liked as a young pup were the American shows like Eureeka's Castle, Under The Umbrella Tree, and one about some Crocodiles and Ducks in a swamp.

I actually did enjoy The Gophers, The House of Gristle (Grizzle?).

heh :stick_out_tongue: Zippy looks funny. I really like the idea of a puppet having a zipper for a mouth. It's just strange that I never thought of it before I saw him. I guess someone had to think of it first though.

I guess some or most of you know this already..

.. but, for those of you that don't, Zippy and George's voices on 'Rainbow' were provided by actor Roy Skelton who for many years was one of the Dalek voices on Dr Who!! weird isn't it, from one extreme to the other, obviously a very versatile (voice-atile) actor.

I've just been surfing and found this interview with him.

I don't remember much details about Dr. Who. But are the Daleks those robots that go: "Exterminate!!! EXTERMINATE!!!"? :stick_out_tongue:

Cool - I never knew any of the actual 'Rainbow' puppeteers names! Somehow didn't think Skelton operated Zippy as well as voiceing him, as he's known as an actor, and voiceover artist and not a pupeteer.

I wonder if he recorded his dialogue in advance for the puppeteers and cast to act with or spoke Zippy's lines through a microphone off-stage? (The Dalek voices were done this way in real-time from a corner of the studio floor while the Dalek operators trundled the robot props around pressing a button inside to make the dome lights flash in rhythm with the words spoken).

... Come to think of it, this makes a Dalek a sort of puppet doesn't it?? Operated by a person inside moving the gun, famous sink-plunger arm and head, with someone else doing the voice some feet away.
