The only time I ever saw the two collared Kermit was when he and Jim were on What's my line? (I saw it on youtube, I'm too young to have seen it on tv)
I know he lost it sometime between "The Frog Prince" and "Sex & Violence". I think it had to do with a simpler, cleaner design for Kermit. All the Don Sahlin puppets had that cool "scroungy" look about them that I miss.

Well, many of the early specials where he had it (The Frog Prince, The Muppet Musicians of Bremen, and The Muppet Valentine Show) have been shown on TV since their original broadcast, and the first two of those three have been released on video in the past. There are also a lot of Sesame Street sketches where he had two collars, which continued to be shown in new episodes untill the late 1990s, and some of these sketches have been released on video.

Boy, I didn't remember the double collar at all until this thread, so I checked him out on Youtube. It was actually a little distracting to see it like that, and I agree that a single collar gives him a much cleaner look.
Kermit had a complete make over before the start of TMS. Maybe it was a way of stating that Kermit would be starting afresh and to try and distance himself away from SS. Jim wanted to move away from using the Muppets purely for entertaining kids so maybe the new-look Kermit was a way to show a separation from Kermit on SS to Kermit on TMS.
I could be wrong you know.
