Thankfully the tornado didn't touch down .big sigh of relief!
The newscaster on one of the channels kept mentioning hail the size of ping pong balls. Now I know that he was serious & I know it's no laughing matter. But whenever he said "ping pong ball" he kind of sounded like The Swedish Chef! (But the meteorologist isn't Swedish or Scandanavian!)
Dang you CHEF!---->:hungry:
(trying not to laugh:wink:)

Gee whiz Kathy, an EF-3 tornado basically ripped apart a town just south of me last week... on top of that, in 2009, East Tennessee had a total of 10 tornadoes that year.

Besides, I've heard of tornadoes in Florida before: the twister that hit Miama in May 1997 is famous, because it debunked rumors that tornadoes don't strike cities (likewise, the myth that tornadoes don't strike near mountains either, East Tennessee is very mountainous)... that same tornado struck dry land, then plowed into the bay and became a water spout.

And yeah, tornadoes are no stranger to Florida.We get a lot of tornado watches/warnings & some tornadoes even touch down! A couple of years ago there was a tornado.So my mother & I had to bring our dog & cats into a closed in area (my mother's closet)What a pain in the butt THAT was!:rolleyes:

I had a bad headache one day. There was a tornado warning. Supposedly it was a mile away when I lived in MS. I guess it must've gotten closer, because my sinuses exploded. There was blood for many, many minutes. I got really, REALLY cold, I guess from blood loss. Oh well.

Good news: I guess that I have an internal tornado warning system, LOL.

Thank goodness you were all right Kathy. Also Snowth and whoever else could have been struck. We really need a smiley to indicate relief.

We call tornadoes cyclones in Australia. I don't think we get them very often but in 1974 there was the big Cyclone Tracy that wiped out the city of Darwin on Christmas Day.:eek:

Well, I've heard them called cyclones here in the States as well. Think of Wizard of Oz, where Dorothy is looking down through her bedroom window, sees the interior of the tornado, then looks back at Toto and yells something like "We're caught inside the cyclone!"

I've known them to be called tornadoes, cyclones and hurricanes. I don't know if there's any distinctive difference but the overall effect is horrifyingly the same.
