The Thanksgiving Curse

I just have to vent... I swear I'm cursed. Anyone ever watch Friends where they talk about how Chandler always has something bad happen to him around Thanksgiving? Well, that's me in real life. It never fails- around Thanksgiving every year for the past several years, something bad or sad happens to me, in varying degrees.
It started with the year the guy I was seeing broke up with me around Thanksgiving- over the phone. I got a horrible flu around that time, too. The next year the first cat I had ever had and loved died from cancer, which is twice as horrible for me since I'm such an animal person. The year after that, my parents told me they were moving from the house I had spent over 20 years of my life in. This came as a shock as they had promised me they wouldn't be moving for another couple of years. They moved early instead, and made me spend my Thanksgiving break that year packing up my entire life at that house in tears.

Then came the year where my father told me literally (and I mean LITERALLY) in the middle of a bite of the Thanksgiving turkey that he and my mom were separating. :frown:

Last year I thought I might get off easy, as nothing seemed to be happening, but my husband and I got pulled over by a cop on the way to his parents house for Thanksgiving dinner. My husband was speeding, but we didn't get a ticket for that, which would have been a valid reason to give us a ticket. Instead, he fines us $35 for the fact that my pug was sitting on my lap in the front seat rather than in a dog crate in the back. We were shocked as we didn't know that was a law for dogs in cars (I know it's a law for pickup trucks). Come to find out later that it ISN'T a law at all, and the ticket was unjustified. But as we couldn't afford to take time off from work to go down to MA and argue in court about it, we had to pay. Argh.

This year I was determined to scrape by without the curse grabbing me... but the week of Thanksgiving I found out my pug needs $850 worth of surgery on her back leg. It would be tempting to write this one off as just coincidence, if it were not for the fact that 6 weeks ago she just had the same $850 worth of surgery for the same condition on the OTHER back leg. And at the time the vet felt certain the other leg wouldn't go right away. Apparently he wasn't aware that I have a Thanksgiving curse.

Frankly, it's beginning to strike me as funny rather than depressing now. But all the same, next year I'm locking myself in a room until November's over. Just kidding. :stick_out_tongue:
