PROLOGUE
Thousands and thousands of years ago there once existed a race of ogre-like creatures known as Gorgs. They all lived independantly together in clusters of small clans in a spacious countryside. They had built makeshift tents out of sticks and large pieces of fabric material. The males all cut the wood to form the sticks and the females sewed the coverings and they were all very pleased with their shelters.
During the day the Gorg children loved to play games together while the adults did all the work including cooking, washing and supervising the kids so they didn't start fighting or getting into any other mischief. Some of the kids, particularly the boys, liked to try to catch and play with tiny creatures called Fraggles, who lived in a great big rock filled with catacombs that sat nearby. The adults didn't really care much for the Fraggles, but they did always watch the children to make sure they were not cruel to the little things. They tried to teach them to respect and be humane towards all other species and most of the kids listened to the adults.
However some of them were naughty and loved to torment the poor things. Of course they were immediately reprimanded and punished but still the Fraggles were terrified of the Gorgs and tried their best to avoid being caught.
The Gorgs grew their own food. Nice fresh vegetables. Lettuce, carrots and even radishes.
If it wasn't for the fact that the Fraggles loved the taste of those vegetables, especially the radishes, they probably would have stayed inside their rock and never given the Gorg kids any opportunity to play with them. But the bravest ones always had to sneak an occasional radish out of one of the garden beds and often they were caught and played with. Or sometimes the bravest ones would act as decoys, getting the kids to chase them while their friends collected their food.
Well like I said, the Gorgs didn't really care directly for the Fraggles as such, but they knew they needed to eat too, and there really was plenty for all. So the adults didn't really try to stop them from taking their veggies occasionally. If one of them was in a generous mood he or she might even place a radish right on top of the rock for a Fraggle to find and save them from having to cope with the giant children.
Thus things went on for countless millenia and the Gorgs were a very happy self-contained empire with no one individual Gorg ruling over any of the others. But one day a young boy Gorg said to a young girl Gorg privately, "One day I shall appoint myself as King of our race and you dear Grundlestitch shall become my Queen when we are wed."
"You're so sweet Bronkton." She embraced him tenderly adding, "And when our reign is established you must pass some laws that will put a stop to all this kindness towards those tiny Fraggles. I can't stand the little wretches."
"Anything to make you happy Grundlestitch," said he kissing her on one cheek. "I'll do absolutely anything at all for you my darling. And who knows? One day we may even be able to rule the universe as well as our own Gorg empire."
But of course enough time needed to pass first until they both grew up and were married. And of course it did eventually.
