Nights in Amity Park, located in the state of Arizona, were anything but normal, especially for someone like nervous, clumsy, and sometimes superficial 14-year-old Danny Fenton. Ever since the accident in his ghost-hunting parents’ laboratory, where their newly built “Fenton Portal” had fused and rearranged his molecular structure with ectoplasm, he had been able to transform from human to ghost at will, carrying several supernatural abilities. While in ghost form, Danny’s normal black hair turns white, his eyes change from sky blue to ectoplasmic green, his skin changes from light to dark, and his regular blue jeans, t-shirt, and tennis shoes become a black hazmat suit, consisting of white gloves, boots, belt, and a “DP” (short for his alter-ego name, “Danny Phantom”) emblem on his chest.
When Danny wasn’t off fighting ghosts, he hung out with his best friends, Samantha “Sam” Manson (a seemingly less dreary goth than the stereotypical one with a strict vegetarian lifestyle and taste in dark clothing, as well as interest in the subliminal and nether-worldly) and Tucker Foley (a light-hearted, optimistic, and extremely intelligent jokester of a boy who enjoyed talking, but often did not know when to keep his mouth shut). On one particular evening, Danny and his friends had gone to see a double feature at the newly established Muppet Matinee Theater. Once the second feature was over, they headed in the direction of FentonWorks, home of Danny’s family (who have more or less dedicated themselves to studying and capturing ghosts); no one could miss such a place, due to the glowing neon sign outside and the giant Ops center on its roof.
“You know what I can’t figure out about that movie,” Tucker said, “The fact that it was set in the past. I mean, I know that Jim Henson was mentioned as a young boy in it, but who carried around wheeled upright luggage in that decade.”
“I don’t really think it was meant to be set in the past, Tucker.” Danny remarked. “The only thing we fans have to understand is that it’s a wholesome, entertaining Muppet film.”
“And ya gotta admit that Croaker and Goggles were two of the cutest frogs that you’ve ever seen, next to Kermit himself.” Sam commented.
“One of these days, we’ve gotta get up there to Manhattan and check out that new sequel to Manhattan Melodies they got going.” Tucker suggested. “Man! I dare anyone not to cry during that ‘Saying Goodbye’ melody. It’s obvious that the Muppets are inseparable, but they really had us going when they looked like they were going their different ways.”
“I know! That was like the worst childhood memory for me, knowing that the Muppets weren’t ever going to be together again!” Sam exclaimed, just as those last two words reminded her of another memorable song from Manhattan Melodies, which she started singing. “Together again! Gee, it’s great to be together again!” Danny and Tucker smiled, joining in with her on the singing. “I just can’t imagine that you’ve ever been gone! It’s not starting over…it’s just going on!” Before the three could sing another verse, a wisp of blue mist came out of his mouth, signifying that his “Ghost Sense” had alerted him of a nearby ghost.
“Looks like it’s time to put on makeup and dress up right.” Danny said, and just soon after he did say that, a blue, dragon-like monster had flown past them. “Because I’m going ghost tonight!” Before Danny had the opportunity to transform into his ghost form, the sight of his family’s RV (built with many nifty ghost-catching gadgets) had kept him from doing so, as he and his friends watched his parents chase the blue, dragon-like phantom.
“Hi, Danny! Get home! Your past curfew! Bye!!” Danny’s mother (Maddie Fenton) said speedily as they zoomed past him, Sam, and Tucker. As soon as his parents were out of sight, Danny and his friends then spotted his older sister, Jasmine “Jazz” Fenton, running down the street and obviously chasing after the RV. He was surprised to see his big sister wearing that same blue jumpsuit that his mother often wore, as she ran down the road.
“What’s…up…Danny?” Jazz said, panting heavily as she stopped near them and took a brief break.
“Jazz, what the heck is going on?” Danny asked, and Jazz took a deep breath, before she explained the whole thing to her brother.
“OK. Mom and Dad were working on the Ghost Portal again, and when they tried to see if it would still work, that dragon ghost came flying out through the portal and escaped the house, before Mom and Dad had the chance to capture it.” Jazz said, soon before she went back to panting.
“And you’ve decided to join them in on the hunt?” Danny asked, and Jazz gave him a bright smile.
“Heck yes! It’s a slow Friday night, and I need somethin’ better to do!” Jazz replied, just before she went back to running down the street and catching up with the RV. With his family plain out of sight, Danny transformed from his human form to his ghost one in a matter of seconds and turned to give his friends important instructions.
“I’m gonna try and chase this ghost back to FentonWorks. You guys get over there and get those thermos prepared!” Danny demanded, before he flew off in the direction that his family had chased the blue phantom.
“He could at least say ‘please’.” Tucker uttered, and Sam looked and gave him a disgusted look, right before the two of them ran to FentonWorks.
Because Danny’s flight capabilities were extremely faster than Jazz’s running and twice as speedy as the family RV, he was able to catch up with the blue, dragon-like phantom that was flying twenty feet in the air. With a better and more up close view of the ghost, Danny realized that it was nothing more than a Muppet that went by the name of Uncle Deadly. Being the Muppet fan-boy that he was, Danny felt bad about wanting to capture Deadly himself, because he was no better than his parents. He wanted to turn back, but knew that he had to get to the bottom of the situation, if he wanted to insure Deadly’s safety.
“Hey, you!” Danny said to Deadly, who turned his head for a brief moment to see Danny flying behind him. “Stop! I’m not going to hurt you! Neither are my parents and sister!”
“It’s not you or those mortals that I am feared about!” Deadly remarked. “It is a much more fierce force that I am worried about at this moment.”
“Well, if you let me help you, then maybe we can take down whatever force it is that’s threatening our world.” Danny offered. “I’m a protector. Maybe not the greatest one in the world, but I do what I can to save the planet.”
“Not even your ghostly powers can protect this realm, child.” Deadly denied, and Danny made a strange face over the way Deadly addressed him as “child.” “Do whatever you can to protect your family, but leave fate to the rest of the world!!” And with that being said, Deadly dived down towards the street and rounded a corner that led directly into an alleyway.
“Why is it always the blue ones that are the most stubborn?” Danny muttered, as he dived towards the street himself and chased after Uncle Deadly down the alleyway. The two had eventually come across a brick wall, which they were both able to pass through instantly, even though it led them straight into the first floor of an apartment building. They traveled across at least fifteen different apartment rooms before they finally ended up back outside. “Would you just stop for a moment, so I can talk to you?!”
“With Mephisto and his black-hearted son coming to this realm, there is no stopping, child!!” Deadly yelled, before he passed right through the roof of the Saint Nelson Cathedral, possibility the safest place for anyone (including religious ghosts) in Amity Park to be in. And once Danny spotted his parents pulling the RV up to the front of the cathedral (and his sister approaching it close behind), he knew that he had to get in there and protect Deadly.
“I can never have an ordinary Friday night, can I?” Danny said to himself, just as he flew over the cathedral’s roof and passed through it to come right into the church. As soon as he was inside, he noticed how Deadly was crouched down at the head of the basilica, praying to an unseen figure.
“I realize that it is not wise to call upon you, unless it is of the utmost emergency, of course. But I assure you that this situation is most definitely an emergency!” Deadly exclaimed, his voice echoing throughout the basilica, as Danny looked on in confusion. “Please! Things have become completely uncontrollable now! You should understand more than anyone else of what it’s like to have an out-of-control son! And his father…well, he is not any better than him! And this Jareth is not making things any easier!” There was a strong sense of fear in Deadly’s voice, as he pleaded to the unseen figure. “Please…Help me…Help us!”
“Who is he talking to?” Danny murmured, just as the doors to the cathedral flew open and in came Danny’s father (Jack Fenton) with his infamous Ghost Weasel in hand, followed by Maddie and Jazz, who both tried to talk Jack out of starting a fight on sacred grounds.
“Jack Fenton, you put that Ghost Weasel down right now!” Maddie demanded. “You are not going to blow holes in a church!”
“Come on, Dad. A better idea would be to chase him out of the cathedral itself.” Jazz suggested.
“OK, Miss Smarty-Shorts!” Jack remarked. “How the heck do you intend chasing him out of here?”
“Well, uh…” Jazz didn’t quite have an idea at the moment; but when she noticed Danny floating near the rafters, she immediately got one. “I think…” Unfortunately, Jack was quick to interrupt her, just as she opened her mouth.
“Ah-ha!! That’s the real issue here!” He shouted. “Only I’m allowed to do all of the thinking here!!!” Jazz just rolled her eyes in disgust, not wanting to make a retort to Jack’s comment that might get her grounded. “Just stand back, girls! I can handle this ghost, without even puttin’ a dent in the walls!” The moment Jack charged up the Ghost Weasel, everyone inside began to react with fear, realizing what the weapon (and the man holding it) was capable of doing to the cathedral’s interior, as well as its exterior.
“NO!!!!!!” But before Jack could have fired the weapon at Uncle Deadly, pillars of black flames and white smoke both appeared at the center of the basilica, obscuring Jack’s vision of Uncle Deadly. Before anyone knew it, out of the blackened fire stepped Death himself, aiming his scythe directly at Jazz, Maddie, and Jack.
“MAKE ONE MORE MOVE, JACK FENTON, AND I WILL STEAL YOUR SOUL!” Jack, all too familiar with the entity known as Death, immediately dropped his Ghost Weasel to the floor and smiled sheepishly at him.
“Sure. No problem, D-Man.” Jack gave Death a thumb up for no apparent reason, and his gesture made Maddie and Jazz slap their foreheads and shake their heads in disgust, while Death directed his attention to his old friend, Uncle Deadly.
“YOU’VE SUMMONED ME TO THIS CATHEDRAL FOR WHAT REASON, DEADLY?” Deadly still had fears in his eyes, but not from the black, ominous, hooded sight before him.
“It is him, Death. The one we’ve learn to refer as ‘The Son of Mephistopheles’. He is forming an alliance with the Goblin King, Jareth, to go after the vessel that carries the demon known as Zarathos and use his powers to transform this realm into their new hellish version of it.” No one of the Fenton family members had any clue what Deadly was telling Death, but they knew it in their bones that it could not be good.
“MEPHISTO HAS LOST TOTAL CONTROL OF HIS SPAWN. IF HE CANNOT STOP HIM AND THIS “GOBLIN KING” THAT HE HAS ALLIED HIMSELF WITH, THEN WE SHALL.” Just as soon after Death declared that did Danny float down from the rafters and landed near Death and Uncle Deadly, much to the surprise of Jack and Maddie.
“It’s the Ghost Kid!!” Maddie screamed.
“Let’s get him!!!!” Jack shouted, and when he and his wife attempted to go after Danny, Death slightly turned his head and faced his hood towards the two, glaring at them with cold, red eyes and making them stop dead in their tracks. Jazz couldn’t believe the way her parents (especially her own mother) had acted in that church and in front of Death, who turned his attention to Danny.
“DANNY PHANTOM. WHAT REASON DO YOU HAVE TO BE IN THIS CHURCH?” Danny tried to muster whatever courage he had in him to speak to Death carefully and audibly.
“Well, sir…I don’t exactly understand all that going on right now, but it sounds like you two could use some serious help.” Danny said, and he gestured towards his sister and parents. “And I know that these people look threatening to you guys, but they’re actually some pretty nice people.” Jack and Maddie glanced at each other awkwardly, wondering how a “ghost” could know about their niceness. Jazz cringed over Danny’s error, at the same time Danny realized it himself and immediately covered himself. “I, uh, mean they look like some pretty nice folks to me…don’t they?” Death turned to the other members of the Fenton family, not too pleased at the sight of the ghost-hunting weapons that they carried with them, but knew that they had the capabilities of stopping the forces that threatening both the mortal realm and the nether realm.
“YES, DESPITE THEIR DESPICABLE PLEASURE FOR HUNTING GHOULS, THEY DO SEEM TO HAVE THE NECESSITIES FOR STOPPING THE PLANS OF MEPHISTO’S SON AND HIS GOBLIN KING COMPANION.” Jazz, Jack, and Maddie had shown off some weak smiles in appreciation of Death’s acknowledgment to their ghost-hunting skills and equipment. However, the smiles had disappeared as soon as Sam and Tucker stormed into the cathedral, both carrying Fenton Thermos.
“Hey, what’s taking so…?” Tucker knew exactly when to stop talking the moment that he and Sam noticed Death in the basilica.
“Now there’s a sight you don’t see everyday.” Sam uttered, while Danny realized that Death had his gaze directly on the thermos that Sam and Tucker were holding. From the way his eyes were glowing ever so brightly beneath his hood, Danny and the others knew that he could not have been happy, which brought Danny himself to formulate a quick plan. Once he did, he immediately went with it.
“And these two mortals have the necessities as well, sir.” Danny said, flying towards Sam and Tucker, hovering behind them, and whispering in their ears. “The blue ghost we were chasing says our world’s going to turn into heck, if we don’t help him and Death stop Satan’s son and some Goblin King guy. Now follow along.” Danny had said all of those things as quickly as he could to keep his plan going and prevent Death from exterminating Sam and Tucker. He flew back to the sides of Death and Uncle Deadly, who were both facing the five mortals. “If you ask me, sir, I would say you have the perfect army to stop Mephisto’s son and the Goblin King from taking over this realm and ending all existence as we know it.”
“AN ALLIANCE OF OUR OWN? WITH GHOST-HUNTING MORTALS?”
“I have to say that it does sound ridiculous, Death.” Deadly commented. “But with the situation quickly becoming more dire than it already is, what choice do we have?” Death admitted that Deadly was right in what he was saying. There was no time to consider the consequences of allying with mortals. The more time they wasted, the greater their adversaries’ chances of controlling the world became.
“VERY WELL. FROM THIS DAY TO THE TIME WE THWART THE PLANS OF MEPHISTO’S SON AND HIS DEADLY ALLIANCE, WE SHALL FORM OUR OWN FOR THE PURPOSE OF LIFE ITSELF.” Sam, Tucker, and the Fenton family sighed a breath of relief, until Death had then added, “BUT JUST KNOW THAT IF YOU DARE BETRAY DEADLY, DANNY PHANTOM, AND ESPECIALLY ME, THEN I WILL NOT HESITATE TO KILL YOU ALL MYSELF…SLOWLY AND…PAINFULLY!!!” The Fenton family and Danny’s friends all swallowed very hard, as they heeded the ghoul’s warning.
“Sure. No problem. Whatever you say, man. We’re with you all the way. No sweat.” They responded in unison, and Danny swallowed hard himself, starting to think about how deadly their own alliance could become, if someone were to anger the very cause of their death.
