An interesting moment that occurs in this video (which seems to have been produced within a few years of Mr Hooper's death), is that when Big Bird returns with the newspaper, he says that all he could get to read was a paper from Mr Hooper's store. You can hear him say "Mr L... Hooper", and it is so subtle and discreet that it seems to be a simple mistake on Caroll Spinney's (as opposed to Big Bird's) part.
So one is led to wonder... what was the status quo of this gag at the time? If the man was no longer around, did they disband the "Mr Looper" joke, and Caroll was doing that line out of habit?
If memory serves correctly, in Follow That Bird, Big Bird clearly asks the kids who come up to his cage to phone "Looper's" store... but these days, he seems to refer to the store itself as "Hooper's Store", but calls the character "Mr Looper"
examples...
* Alan's first episode, Big Bird asks for a birdseed milkshake, Alan mentions he found a recipe on the fridge, Big Bird says "Must be Mr. Looper's recipe"
* After the hurricane had destroyed Big Bird's nest, Big Bird is standing on the street talking about what had happened, and he says that it's a good thing he brought "Radar and my picture of Mr Looper with me"
Kinda touching that he can still come up in discussion from time to time... shame they have to pretend that David, Celina, Ruthie, Savion, Carlo, Olivia et al never existed. How's about a few "nostalgic" episodes... surely teaching kids about local heritage is a postive message that would fit into SS's agenda
