I don't wish to parade around blowing my own trumpet but I'd like to say that I love doing my charity work every Monday to help the poor and needy.
I'm a Catholic and I work as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul society. A Catholic charity organization.

Every Monday morning my fellow churchman Ian picks me up in his car and we usually pick up our friend Lynnie and we drive out to the Wellfare Office where people who are in financial trouble can come to get food to help them and their children. Wellfare is open Mon to Fri but we usually only do Mondays. Other Catholics work the other days. Our hours are officially 9 till 1 but if anyone is inside before closing time we will serve their needs so we can be working till 1:30 or even 2 sometimes. But it makes us feel good to try to help the poor remembering how Jesus reached out to the poor and suffering and how St. Vincent in his lifetime strove to follow Jesus's footsteps.

We give them standard bread, margarine, vegetables, frozen mince and sausage and other basic groceries to feed them. We also give them toilet paper and we try our best to help them sort out their budget and manage their bills. We remember the words of our Saviour "I was hungry and you fed me." so we try to see Jesus in all the people we help and we know that God is pleased with us His servants. We pray that we will be able to do our part to make life happier for our fellow humans. We are all volunteers awaiting our heavenly pay when our journy of life is over. It means so much to all of us:smile:

That's sweet

I'm about to donate a bunch of stuffed animals of mine to Riley Hospital. Like 20-40.

I spend cash at St. Vinny's thrift store. I have found some very cool items there:

- A vintage 1970's Oscar The Grouch cookie jar

-A working Bell & Howell 16mm film projector

-Many Sesame Street books for my daughter

-A CD from Brit-Punk band Sham-69

and lots of other stuff I can remember

Yes you can get lots of good things from St.Vinnies' shops. We must have at least four in our city. We depend upon their business very well.

Sometimes I wonder if many people fully understand just what the purpose of the shops really is exactly. After all if they weren't selling second-hand merchandise we wouldn't have any money to buy all the groceries for the needy:smile:

We are all volunteers in the shops as well as the wellfare office of course. If we were being paid it would pull the rug out from under our charitable business:wink:

I wish I could get back into charity work, but right now I don't really see the opportunity like I used to. I used to do midnight runs in high school and college. For those of you who may not know, this is where we would make bagged meals, (sandwiches and fruit, Etc), and bring it down to various stops in the streets of the city, giving it to the people who live there. We also collected clothing, and the people sorted through it and took what they wanted. It was nice, because we not only got a good feeling from helping people, but we also got to talk to them, joking with them and hearing their experiences.
Now I volunteer at the local nursing home twice a week. I enjoy it, and everyone there seems to also, so I can get my helping fix that way, LOL.

Work is going very well at the welfare center. Sometimes I even sing while I pack the grocery bags off the shelves and some of the people love to hear me. I perform Spiritual songs, the classic hymns, and they boost the spirits of our friends who come to us for help.

One lady asked me to sing "The Old Rugged Cross" for her today so I did and as an encore I decided to sing "Amazing Grace" as well. And the smile on her face when she took her food for her family was well worth it. Every little thing that helps the poor and needy is a worthwhile treasure to pursue.

That's really neat that you sing when you work Marty! I love singing hymns as a prayer to God. I'm sure that God is smiling on you just as much as the people who are listening to you when you sing. Keep up the amazing work!
