Simon Soundman appreciation thread

let's all appreciate that great sound man, Simon Soundman.

I remember seeing him in the background in A Muppet family Christmas, as a customer in one Grover The Waiter skit (and I had always thought he looked like Fat Blue), and I remember him in a sketch where he met Old Mac Donald.

I was just looking at the scans of the Sesame Street Live program in a thread about Sesame Street Live and saw him in many pictures. I noticed that in those drawings, he didn't have a mustache (and the same can be said about the inside covers of the Sesame Street treasury books). I thought he did. Did he have a mustache, or did he just have a shadow underneath his nose that looks like a mustache?

What are your memories of him? Do you remember any episodes that focused on him? Were there very many books with him (I don't ever recall seeing him in any books besides the ones I mentioend)? Does anybody know when his last new appearance was? Did he sing any songs, and were any of them included on any albums? Did he appear in any videos?

this one's my favorite--he's surprisingly jazzy when he goes to the music store, although i don't know why he needs to buy a trumpet when he can sound just like them! the song at the end sounds like Brotherhood of Man from the musical How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.

Simon Soundman was a great tool for teaching children how to identify sound effects in a fun and interesting way!

It is also hinted at in the restaurant sketch that he and Mr. Johnson/Fat Blue are brothers.

It makes sense; they're both made out of the same puppet pattern, and they're both voiced by Jerry Nelson. And some people commenting on that skit actually thought that was Fat Blue in that skit when they were younger!

Yes, Simon Soundman was awesome. He kinda reminded me of Gerald McBoing-Boing in some ways, but he was a good character with a good concept. I liked his little song from the 1972 season premiere about walking his dog, complete with pictures to accompany it. I am pretty sure the curriculum of that song was to identify different sounds.

I like the skits where characters end up imitating Simon's sound talents. Like when the hardware store manager made a cash register sound, or the music store manager started sounding like a band, and when Ernie made a telephone sound and a slamming door sound. And how when Simon was singing to his lady, the lady made an applauding sound with her voice.
