Chapter 1

It was an exciting day at Churcil Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the day of the Kentucky Derby, and two of the horses in the race were Buster the Horse and Fred the Wonder Horse. It was the morning of the race, and the horses had to get there early.

"Well, I'm feeling as healthy as a horse", said Fred. Marshall Grover, on the other hand, was still tired.

"Oh, but...", yawned Grover, "Could we not have just waited a few extra hours?"

"We horses have to stay fit and in shape if we want to win the derby", said Fred.

"Oh, right", said Grover, "And I hope you win."

Forgetful Jones had come with Buster.

"Well, here we are", said Forgetful Jones, "But, uh, where are we?"

"We're at the Kentucky Derby", said Buster, "Don't you remember?"

"No", said Forgetful Jones.

"Well, I'm not surprised", said Buster, "But I've entered the derby, and I hope that I win the derby".

Buster and Fred then greeted each other.

"Oh, hello, Fred" said Buster.

"Hi, Buster", said Fred, "Good luck at the race."

"Same to you", said Buster.

"Horses, go into the medical barn for your physicals".

"Well, good luck, partner", said Grover.

"See you later, Grover", said Fred.

"Bye, Forgetful", said Buster.

"Bye? Where you going?", asked Forgetful, having forgot why they were there, again.

Within a few hours people were at the derby, many dressed in hats. Since two of the horses and their trainers were from Sesame Street then many of the Sesame Street residents got free passes to the derby, and got to sit in a skybox.

And they were all wearing hats. Big Bird and Ernie were wearing baseball caps, The Count was wearing a top hat, Cookie Monser and Herry were wearing derbys, Bert was wearing a pigeons hat, and Biff and Sully were wearing their regular helmets.

"Well, I am excited", said Big Bird, "I wonder who'll win."

"I really like this buttered popcorn and soda they have", said Ernie.

"I really like the plain popcorn and plain water they have", said Bert.

"One horse, two horses, three horses, four horses...", counted The Count.

The announcer started making announcements.

"And now here is reporter Kermit the Frog!"

Kermit was out next to the track.

"Yeah, this is a great place to... What? We're on? Oh, hi ho, Kermit the Frog here at the Kentucky Derby! Many celebrities have come to the derby this ear, including Guy Smiley, Little Jerry and the Monotones, Polly Darton, Don Music, Placedo Flamingo, Ferlingetti Donnizetti, and Chris and the Alphabeats. But the real stars are the hroses, and I'll speak to some of them now."

First, Kermit walked up to Buster and Forgetful Jones.

"So, how does it feel to be in the derby?", asked Kermit.

"It feels great", said Buster.

"Uh, what feels great?", asked Forgetful.

"Being in the derby", said Buster.

"Who's in the derby?', asked Forgetful.

"I'm in the derby", said Buster.

"And what kind of a derby is it?", asked Forgetful.

"It's the Kentucky Derby", sighed Buster with annoyance.

"And what's a Kentucky Derby?', asked Foretful.

Kermit itnerrutped them: "I don';t have time to watch you two ask and answer questions, I have to talk to the other horses and trainers."

Kermit walked over to Fred the Wonder Horse.

"This here is Fred the Wonder Horse", said Kermit, "He is being traiend by..."

Grover came running.

"Hey, frogggggy babyyyyy", yelled Grover, who slapped Kermit on the back.

"Ugh, this is Marshall Grover, Fred's trainer", said Kermit.

"I am so proud of Fred", said Grover, "He's made it all the way to the derby. But I would be proud of him even if he didn't make it to the derby."

"Thanks, Marshall Grover", said Fred.

Mr. Johnson was in teh conession area, wathcing the interview on one of the indoor TVs.

"I guess this would be a perfect time to get some food", said Mr. Johnson, who wenty to the conession stand, which didn't have a line at the time. However, Grover was the concession clerk.

"Hello, welcome to the Kentucky Derby food stand", said Grover, "How may I help you?"

"What?", said Mr. Johnson, "But... But I just saw you being interviewed on the TV. How could you have been interviewed and then be here so fast?"

"Us supermonsters have to be everywhere, sir", said Grover.

"What does that have to do with the subject?", asked Mr. Johnson.

Chapter 2

An announcement was heard: "All horses get with your trainers. Racing egins in 15 minutes."

Forgetful Jones brought Buster to the restroom.

"What are we doing here, Forgetful?", asked Buster.

"Wasn't I suppposed to take you here?", asked Forgetful.

"No, you were supposed to take me to the starting line", said Buster.

Then Forgetful took BUster to the parking lot.

"Well, here it is, the race track", said Forgetful.

"This isn't the race track, Forgetful", said Buster, "This is the parking lot!"

"Oh, yeah", said Forgetful, "I forgot!"

"Look, I already know the way to the track", said Buster, "I'll go myself."

"I'll follow you", said Forgetful.

THey got there.

"Well, giddy-up, partner!", saidForgetful.

"You're not riding me in the race", said Buster, "A professional rider is!"

And Buster's rider came by. He was a fat blue man with curly black hair and a large nose.

"Hello, Buster", said Busters trainer, "I hope that we win."

"Well, what should I do?", asked Forgetful.

"Oh, Forgetful, there you are", said Clementine, "Come sit in the stands."

"Oh, yeah", said Forgetful.

Fred then showed up.

"Well, good luck, Buster", said Fred.

"Yeah, thanks", said Buster.

"Hey, you two aren't supposed to wish each other luck!", said Buster's rider.

"We're showing good sportsmanship", said Buster.

"That's right", said Fred.

"But this is the Derby!", said the rider.

Grover showed up, this time in rider gear.

"Well, let's get ready to rumble", said Grover.

"Wait, Marshall Grover", said Fred, "You mena you're riding me, too?"

"Of course", said Grover, "Now let's race!"

Chapter 3

The race was about to begin. A trumpet fanfare was heard.

"I really hope Fred the Wonder Horse wins", said Ernie.

"Yeah, me too", said Bert.

"Well, me got all me cookies on Buster", said Cookie Monster.

"I've bet some birdseed on Buster myself", said Big Bird.

"And now, here is Hoots the Owl with the national anthem", said the announcer.

Hoots played the national anthem on his saxaphone. The audience applauded.

"Thank you, thank you", said Hoots.

"Well, let's go home", said Forgetful Jones.

"Wait, the race isn't over", said Clementine.

"Oh, yeah, I forgot", said Forgetful.

"Ready, set, go", said the announcer. Somebody shot a gun, and the horses ran off.

Grover was struggling.

"Hey, Fred, slow down", cried Grover.

"But if I slow down I'll lose the race", said Fred.

"Well, Fred, we're both in the first and second place", said Buster.

"Shut up and concentrate!", said Buster's rider.

"Well, Buster and Fred are both in the lead, Sully", said Biff.

Sully was about to say something, before getting interrupted by Biff.

"I really like being out here in this crowd with all these horses running."

Fred and Buster were in the lead, but then the other horses past them.

"We might be last", said Fred.

"Well, we can make it", said Buster.

"Just keep going, Fred!", said Grover.

"They are last", cried Herry.

"And me might lose all cookeis", cried, Cookie Monster, who took his hat and ate it. Then he cried some more.

"That's one, one crying monster!", said The Count.

Meanwhile, Buster and Fred did manage to get ahead of the other horses, Fred being far ahead of Buster.

"We are going to win, Fred!", said Grover.

"We're gonna be champions!", said Fred.

"Well, Buster's going to win", said Forgetful.

"That's not Buster, that's Fred the Wonder Horse", said Clementine.

"Oh, yeah", said Forgetful, embarrassed.

Grover and Fred were about to make it to the finish line, but then Grover slipped off Fred and fell.

"Oh, no!", said Fred, "I'll save you!"

Fred came running back to get Grover, and the other horses ran past.

"Come on, get up! Get up!", said Fred.

"Oh, that did not feel good", said Grover.

"And the winner is Buster the Horse!", said the announcer.

Forgetful Jones and Clementine cheered. Cookie Monster cheered, too.

"Me get more cookies!", shouted Cookie Monster.

"You just won the Kentucky Derby", said a reporter.

"What are you going to do now?", asked another reporter.

"I'm going to Disneyland!", said Buster, "But first I must check on Fred."

Buster came to see how Fred and Grover were doing.

"Sorry you lost", said Buster.

"Well, I didn't get hurt much", said Grover.

Forgetful Jones showed up.

"Well, I'm sorry you lost, Buster", said Forgetful.

"I won, Forgetful", said an annoyed Buster.

"Well, it was a good race", said Fred.

"Well, I am ready to go home, Fred", said Grover.

They were about to leave, but then they found a game stand.

"Hey would either of you like to play a game of ring toss?", asked the stand owner.

"I would", said Fred, who took some rings and tossed them, and got them all in the pin.

"Good job, Fred", said Grover.

"Here is your prize", said the owner, "A derby hat!"

"Wow", said Fred, trying it on.

"Well, you may have lost the race, but you still won the derby", said Grover.
