Chapter 1
It was an exciting day at Churcil Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the day of the Kentucky Derby, and two of the horses in the race were Buster the Horse and Fred the Wonder Horse. It was the morning of the race, and the horses had to get there early.
"Well, I'm feeling as healthy as a horse", said Fred. Marshall Grover, on the other hand, was still tired.
"Oh, but...", yawned Grover, "Could we not have just waited a few extra hours?"
"We horses have to stay fit and in shape if we want to win the derby", said Fred.
"Oh, right", said Grover, "And I hope you win."
Forgetful Jones had come with Buster.
"Well, here we are", said Forgetful Jones, "But, uh, where are we?"
"We're at the Kentucky Derby", said Buster, "Don't you remember?"
"No", said Forgetful Jones.
"Well, I'm not surprised", said Buster, "But I've entered the derby, and I hope that I win the derby".
Buster and Fred then greeted each other.
"Oh, hello, Fred" said Buster.
"Hi, Buster", said Fred, "Good luck at the race."
"Same to you", said Buster.
"Horses, go into the medical barn for your physicals".
"Well, good luck, partner", said Grover.
"See you later, Grover", said Fred.
"Bye, Forgetful", said Buster.
"Bye? Where you going?", asked Forgetful, having forgot why they were there, again.
Within a few hours people were at the derby, many dressed in hats. Since two of the horses and their trainers were from Sesame Street then many of the Sesame Street residents got free passes to the derby, and got to sit in a skybox.
And they were all wearing hats. Big Bird and Ernie were wearing baseball caps, The Count was wearing a top hat, Cookie Monser and Herry were wearing derbys, Bert was wearing a pigeons hat, and Biff and Sully were wearing their regular helmets.
"Well, I am excited", said Big Bird, "I wonder who'll win."
"I really like this buttered popcorn and soda they have", said Ernie.
"I really like the plain popcorn and plain water they have", said Bert.
"One horse, two horses, three horses, four horses...", counted The Count.
The announcer started making announcements.
"And now here is reporter Kermit the Frog!"
Kermit was out next to the track.
"Yeah, this is a great place to... What? We're on? Oh, hi ho, Kermit the Frog here at the Kentucky Derby! Many celebrities have come to the derby this ear, including Guy Smiley, Little Jerry and the Monotones, Polly Darton, Don Music, Placedo Flamingo, Ferlingetti Donnizetti, and Chris and the Alphabeats. But the real stars are the hroses, and I'll speak to some of them now."
First, Kermit walked up to Buster and Forgetful Jones.
"So, how does it feel to be in the derby?", asked Kermit.
"It feels great", said Buster.
"Uh, what feels great?", asked Forgetful.
"Being in the derby", said Buster.
"Who's in the derby?', asked Forgetful.
"I'm in the derby", said Buster.
"And what kind of a derby is it?", asked Forgetful.
"It's the Kentucky Derby", sighed Buster with annoyance.
"And what's a Kentucky Derby?', asked Foretful.
Kermit itnerrutped them: "I don';t have time to watch you two ask and answer questions, I have to talk to the other horses and trainers."
Kermit walked over to Fred the Wonder Horse.
"This here is Fred the Wonder Horse", said Kermit, "He is being traiend by..."
Grover came running.
"Hey, frogggggy babyyyyy", yelled Grover, who slapped Kermit on the back.
"Ugh, this is Marshall Grover, Fred's trainer", said Kermit.
"I am so proud of Fred", said Grover, "He's made it all the way to the derby. But I would be proud of him even if he didn't make it to the derby."
"Thanks, Marshall Grover", said Fred.
Mr. Johnson was in teh conession area, wathcing the interview on one of the indoor TVs.
"I guess this would be a perfect time to get some food", said Mr. Johnson, who wenty to the conession stand, which didn't have a line at the time. However, Grover was the concession clerk.
"Hello, welcome to the Kentucky Derby food stand", said Grover, "How may I help you?"
"What?", said Mr. Johnson, "But... But I just saw you being interviewed on the TV. How could you have been interviewed and then be here so fast?"
"Us supermonsters have to be everywhere, sir", said Grover.
"What does that have to do with the subject?", asked Mr. Johnson.
