BAILEY - 16-year-old Emily Keyes was shot during a hostage situation in Platte Canyon High School and died at St. Anthony Central Wednesday afternoon. Keyes was shot in the head by a gunman who had taken her hostage at around noon on Wednesday.
The hostage situation ended when the SWAT unit raided the classroom. The Park County Sheriff's office says the gunman fired a handgun at SWAT officers before killing Keyes and shooting and killing himself.
Keyes was one of two female students being held hostage in the classroom.
The other student was not injured and she was pulled from the room during the SWAT raid.
Keyes was transported from the school to St. Anthony Central in Denver by Flight for Life and died around 4:30 p.m.
Keyes was a 16-year-old junior at Platte Canyon and had a twin brother.
The school remained an active scene because investigators were still searching for any explosive devices around the scene.
There were initially six female hostages, but four were released.
The Park County Sheriff's office says the hostages were released one at a time as they negotiated with the gunman. However, he broke off negotiations at 3:30 p.m. and set a deadline of 4 p.m.
"It was then decided that a tactical solution needed to be done in an effort to save the two hostages that were in the room," said Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener.
"He gave us a four o'clock deadline, said something was going to happen at four o'clock," said Wegener.
Authorities could not confirm if the gunman was a parent, a staff member from the school, or an unrelated individual. Wegener says they have very little information about the gunman, but they do not believe he was from Bailey.
9NEWS has learned that one of the difficulties authorities are having in identifying the gunman is because the sheriff's office does not know yet how he arrived at the school. If it was by car, they have to wait until all students and teachers have picked up their cars and then see what is left and see if they can identify him that way.
The lockdown of Platte Canyon High School and nearby Fitzsimons Middle School began around 11:40 a.m. just after shots were fired. Reportedly, the Park County Sheriff's office received a 911 call from the man inside the school telling them he had a hostage.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's office then sent its bomb squad to the school and put its SWAT unit on alert.
The school was then evacuated and the SWAT unit was sent to the school a short time later.
The father of a student who was inside the classroom when the hostage situation began told 9NEWS his son did not want to leave, but was forced to go.
The father says when the gunman first entered the room he forced everyone to line up facing the chalkboard. He told all the boys in the classroom they had to leave. The father says at that point the gunman put the gun to his son's head and forced him to leave.
The father says his son is so shaken he is not sure he will ever be the same again.
Other students told 9NEWS the situation was horrific. They say the gunman forced students to act as intermediaries with the negotiators.
The students say he also tried to blend in before the hostage situation began. They say they saw him walking in the halls and in the library wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a backpack.
About 770 students attend Platte Canyon High School and Fitzsimons Middle School combined.
The students were evacuated to Deer Creek Elementary School, where parents could go and pick them up.
The last bus to arrive at Deer Creek was full of the students who were in the classroom when the hostage situation began.
Both sides of Highway 285 will be closed between mile markers 218 and 222 until noon on Thursday. Only local residents will be allowed into the area.
Classes at both Platte Canyon High School and Fitzsimons Middle School are cancelled for Thursday and Friday.
Crisis counselors will be available at Deer Creek Elementary School. Counseling will also begin at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Platte Canyon Community Church in Bailey.
"Because of the senseless action of a lone gunman, we are grieving tonight," said Wegener.
Wegener says his own son was in the school when the hostage situation began and he was scared to death. "We never expect it will happen in our own back yard," said Wegener.
I was really hopeing she didnt die. I tell you, the crazy people in this world..... My prayers go out to her family....
