OK we all know that in the later years there was a huge dog (in disguise) that was initially named "Woof Woof" and later was changed to Barkley. I could have swore in the early days there was what I thought was a real short lived real dog named Rufus. I'm not sure who he belonged to but I think it was Susan and Gordon's dog. Did a dog by this name actually exist on SS or was I thinking of another show?

Well... Not sure cause I haven't watched/seen every SS episode ever made... Yet.

But here are some possible answers.
1 You might be thinking of the small live puppy Ernie brought into the apartment to surprise Bert with, but was probably returned to the shelter after the boys talked about the responsabilities of owning a pet.
2 There is however a character known as Rufus the Hound from the Swift Wits segments from episodes of Muppets Tonight.
3 There is also a character known as Rufus the Poodle from the special Hey, Cinderella!

Hope this helps.
