This is horrible news. In addition to the classic A Christmas Story, Clark also was responsible for a quartet of groundbreaking horror films, made in the 1970s.
Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (1972) is a comedy/horror film about a group of young actors who inadvertently bring a corpse back to life. Clark recently said he was planning a remake, either as director or producer.
Dead of Night (1972) is a chilling and sad anti-war movie, based on The Monkey's Paw. A young soldier is killed in Vietnam. When his family receives the bad news, his mother refuses to believe her son is dead. She prays for his return, and he comes back home. At first he appears somewhat normal. Then he begins to exhibit bizarre behavior...
Black Christmas (1974) is often called the first modern slasher film, predating Halloween and Friday the 13th. A sorority house is plagued by bizarre phone calls. People start disappearing. And a mysterious, unseen figure known as "Billy" is hiding in the attic. The film features early appearances by Margot Kidder and Andrea Martin. The film was remade last year.
Murder by Decree (1979) - an atmospheric Sherlock Holmes thriller, with Christopher Plummer and James Mason. Holmes and Watson are called in to investigate the Jack the Ripper murders.
Bob Clark also made the teen comedy Porky's (1982), which had several imitators.
An interesting director who dabbled in different genres. He will be missed.
