I know Curious George Goes to the Hospital was written in 1966(which was before they knew smoking was bad). However, on one page, in a picture of a waiting room, there is a sign that says, "No Smoking, Please." Why would the thought even occur to the authors about the idea of smoking not being allowed if it was before they knew smoking was bad?

By common sense, you would not want someone making the hospital room smell bad. Besides, it's actually rude to be talking to someone who is about to pass away as you blow smoke at his/her face. The author of Curious George was just using common sense. I think by that time they indeed knew that smoking was bad. It's quite obvious, considering the ingredients that it contains. You can even see it by just looking into it.

I never heard of that...
My mother told me that they did indeed know.
That's why Uncle Manny ended up in the death bed.

Hope that answered your question!

Not smiling for my uncle...buutt...
smiling in case I helped out a bit.

Actually 1964 was the year they revealed a connection between smoking and lung cancer. So they would have known by the time the book was written.

It is interesting to witness the "logic" people had at the time regarding cigarettes, even after discovering it caused cancer. You wouldn't smoke in a hospital because of the stink and I imagine because it can cause breathing problems. Yet in the '60s and '70s it was permissible to smoke in the middle of Talk Shows and interviews. It really took a long time for people to "get the message." Heh

Thanks, Heralde.
