Rainbow Ode (For Jim)
In palty words my grateful heart is bade
To sing a song of praise for what you made--
Compelling in its stark simplicity,
You showed us things--alone--we could not see
Without your sometimes skewed and funny glance
That makes the timid long to take a chance.
Sometimes not-so-serenely at the helm
From your imagination sprang a realm
Of fantasy and myriad delights
That warmed the dreamers’ hearts and lovers’ nights.
Our manic, sometimes panicked fandom grew
And mourned—still mourns—the spirit that we knew
Could take us from ourselves and make us dream
The fever-brightened visions that we deemed
An equal to the challenge that you gave
An ode to what—from you—we all may have.
Who knew what bits of rapture you could bring
With little bits of magic, felt and string?
The world’s a brighter place because of you--
And darker now without your rainbow hue.
