Pip and Pop name question

This is a fairly stupid question I've been wondering about for some time. I'm hoping someone here can tell me the answer.
Pip and Pop are both referred to as boys. But in one of the early episodes, one of them reminds the other that his middle name is Angela or Angelica- what gives? Were they originaly concieved (no pun intended) of as a boy/girl set and then changed, or is it just a joke?

(My son asked me this question 2 years ago, and I wondered about it before that. My nephew became a Bear addict last month so I KNOW I will get this question again.)

Thanks!
Tera

I'm sure that there are lots of boys out there with girl middle names, or vice-versa.
