I know that for the first season of the show, Oscar the Grouch was orange, and then turned to his trademark green self in season two, and that the explanation was the poluted air at his favorite vacation spot "discolored" his fur... but I was curious, exactly when in season two was that explained because I see no one seemed to make any mention of it in the season two premiere on the Old School set.

It may have never been explained on the show. The Green Oscar's first appearance was actually on The Flip Wilson Show in 1970, before the second Season of SS even started, and that's where Oscar mentioned the reason for his turing Green. This is what I read in Carroll Spinney's Book.

OH! Man I'm embarrassed now, Caroll's book is one of my all time favorite's, but I haven't read it in a while, so I better read it again sometime!

Yeah. I've actually seen Oscar's appearance on "Flip Wilson" at 'You Tube,' but I didn't catch the explanation. I'm wondering if either I missed it or if that part just wasn't up.

Also, I've noticed that Granny Grouch appeared in the season 2 premire and she was green as well. It seemed like that point they were considering Oscar and his whole family to have been green from the start. I always found that kind of odd.

Have you noticed that although her head was furry and green, her hands were smooth and lavendar?

I actually don't know about that. I've just seen her in pics, so I didn't really get a close look.

Anyway, maybe Sesame Workshop (Children's Television Workshop, at the time) had the same idea Bill Watterson had when he created "Calvin and Hobbes." The first strip showed Calvin catching Hobbes in a tiger trap because he wanted to establish how those two got together. Later on, he felt it was unnecessary so later strips seem to indicate that it never happened. I guess it was the same way with Sesame Street. Oscar became famous for his green coloring, so in later eps there was no mention of Oscar being orange. That's probably why it was never explained how Gordon lost his afro, or how Big Bird's appearance and voice changed or anything like that. Kids who watch the show today wouldn't have been aware of these changes, so they feel it's not worth mentioning. Though it would be nice for us Muppet Central fans if every once in a while they referred back to the history of the street or how characters looked when they were 'younger' or stuff like that.

By the way, does anyone know of the dialog between Flip Wilson and Oscar or whoever he was talking to on the show that explained his color change? Again, I think I missed it when I saw it on You Tube. Just my curious mind acting up. Lol.
