Oscar’s “NO” machine

Here’s a sketch that I remember from a long time ago. Not sure if it was from the 70’s or 80’s, and I don’t even recall who was in it besides Oscar. I know that Oscar was showing his latest invention: a machine that answered questions. One of the adults (a guy, I believe) asked, “Isn’t it a beautiful day?” (or something along those lines). In response, the machine displayed a sign that said “NO.”

Oscar: There’s your answer: No! It doesn’t like today.

Adult [to machine]: I’m going to the store to have a soda. Now, don’t you think that’s a good idea?

[Machine displays “NO” sign again.]

Oscar: No! It doesn’t think it’s a good idea.

You get the idea. The machine was designed to say no to whatever question it was asked. But then...

Adult: Is the sky blue?

[Machine begins rattling uncertainly, and smoke starts coming out.]

Adult: Is the sun hot? Is the grass green?

[Machine begins to smoke even more.]

Oscar: STOP! YOU’RE CONFUSING MY MACHINE!

[Machine breaks, possibly exploding.]

There’s another part to this sketch. The same adult stops by to see Oscar, who says he has made some adjustments to the machine.

Adult [to machine]: Is the name of this street Sesame Street?

[Machine displays a sign that says “MAYBE.”]
