Hey guys,
I got back from St. Louis the other day, and I got good news and bad news. Good news first; the surgery will be on June 1st, and they're going to re-align my jaw. I will be in the hospital anywhere from 5-7 days, then be home. I'll be in the ICU for the first two days, then on a floor room for the remainder of the stay. They're going to break my jaw in four different places and position it with bio-degradable screws. I'll be sore as ****, but in due time, I'll get better. I'm not going to be able to talk, as well, and I don't know for how long, so it's pen and paper till I can. It'll take three weeks for me to start feeling myself again but until then I can't drive, work out, etc, as to not put myself at risk for anything. Also, I'm not going to be able to eat much. Just protein shakes and anything that can be put in a blender. By the sixth week, though, I'll be able to start eating right again.

Now the bad news... there's not going to be an ear. And for this, I'm extremely disappointed. When we were at the doctor in April of 2004, he had said he could put on a few tiny screws to the side of my head, and then be able to put on a prosthetic right ear, which would look just like my left one. When we talked to him Friday, he said he doesn't do that, and told us he'd only recommend that. My parents are pretty disappointed as well, and said after the jaw surgery is done, we're going to look into prosthetic ears. But I'd like something that looks real, and won't detatch. And from what the doctor said, it doesn't look like there will ever be the perfect solution, so I've just decided to forget the ear, completely. I've lived this long without one. The jaw bothers me more, anyways. So, even though I may never use all my Q-tips or listen to both sides of headphones, I'm sure I'll live, lol.

As you guys would probably guess, I'm not going to be around the forum much during this summer, but I'll make sure to check my email (lucasbervin@yahoo.com). Thanks for everything guys.

Oh wow, that's awefull! Maybe I haven't read up as much as I should, but I didn't even know you were having the operation. It sounds painful! I hope it is successful, and good luck with the recovery!

Good luck! I hope everything goes well.

You might want to experiment with the liquid diet before the surgery to find what you like. I had a friend who went through something similar and took ages getting well because he just couldn't stand any of the food given him so he didn't eat. Of course, his parents just tended to throw anything together in a blender.

Thanks guys, for all your support. I'm sure I'll be fine. I'm still very disappointed about not gettin that ear, since I've been lookin for doctors since I was 13, and wanting one since I can remember. Maybe that's supposed to be my signature, like Kermit's collar or something.
