The 50's.
Jim Henson was doing Sam and Friends, Wilkins Coffee commercials, and guest spots on some classic shows. By the black and white shows, it was definitely the 50's.
The 60's.
The Muppets started making regular appearances on shows like Ed Sullivan. They had the Muppets sometimes singing 60's songs like Octopus's Garden in one ES episode.
The 70's.
When Sesame Street started out, some of the Anything Muppets were dressed like hippies. And the Muppet Show also aired that time and the Electric Mayhem was like a 70's band.
The 80's.
Muppets went from TV to movies and specials, Fraggle Rock first aired and it had Doozers doing the Moonwalk and breakdancing and Junior Gorg doing The Wave. Dances from the 80's. Muppet Babies came on TV and they did a few spoofs of some 80's movies and TV shows. Sesame Street had a few rap songs, especially one from Cookie Monster. And the Jim Henson Hour aired during the close of the decade. JHH had some skits with 80's style yuppy jokes.
The 90's.
After Jim Henson passed away in 1990, the Muppet studios tried to move on. They made films like Muppet Xmas Carrol and Muppet Treasure Island. They tried to revive the series again for the third time with Muppets Tonight with spoofs of 90's shows like Bay of Pigswatch, Deep Dish Nine, and Seinfeld Babies.
The 00's.
It seems like in the new millenium, the Muppets are now doing TV movies, pizza hut commercials, and making guest appearances on different shows. Now that Disney owns them, we can only wonder what the other half of this decade and future decades holds for them.
