In those scenes where it's so dark that you can only see the eyes of teh characters in the scene, does anybody know how it's done? Are there just black puppets matching the black background who are given eyes that match the characters? Is black cloth put over the character (excluding the eyes)?

The Brian Henson commentary on Muppets Teasure Island talks about this, but I don't know how to word it.

In the Brian Henson commentary on Muppets Teasure Island, Brian says that the eyes are balls of glass, with glue painted on, and there is a light under the lens of the camera so when you turn it on, it makes the eyes light up.

Sometimes they use all-black puppets against a black screen, with white eyes attached. (See "If Moon Was Cookie", in the shot where Cookie's in the dark.) Last season, they used CG eyes when Abby went into Oscar's can.
