had trouble getting into the forums. what happened?

That was happening to me too.

Is it possible you could mention something about it beforehand? It's kind of fustraiting when I wait a matter of minutes till I get a this page can't be displayed error.

If I know the site will be down beforehand, I do try to post about it. Sometimes things happen and it can't be helped until after the fact.

How come sometimes new posts aren't always highlighted?

New posts are highlighted unless of course you don't login and logout of the forum when you visit. If that's the case only new posts within the last hour or so will be marked new.
