The "In Step With" portion of PARADE Magainze today featured Kevin Clash. There's a nice picture of him with Elmo at the piano. It lists his work in television and film and talks about how he came to be involved with Jim Henson. He said he took over Elmo because it had been passed on to Richard Hunt, who hated the character. He also said that while he likes Elmo, his favorite character was Splinter in the Ninja Turtle movies. He said, "I thought that if I could play a 4-foot rat like a 75-year-old man who's the father of teenagers, then I could really act!"

Here's an excert from the article that was on the Web. If anyone has the whole thing handy (we don't get Parade), please feel free to post.

In this week’s “In Step With,” James Brady chats with Kevin Clash, the voice of Sesame Street’s Elmo. Clash not only performs on television—his job takes him all over the world. Why does he travel so much?

“Jim [Henson] made me a kind of scout,” says Clash. “I go all around the world looking for new puppetry talent—China, South Africa, Mexico.”

Recently, Clash’s work took him to Toronto for a unique event: On Aug. 25, Elmo led thousands of kids in the “Hokey-Pokey” to break the Guinness World Record for Largest Hokey-Pokey Song & Dance Routine.

How did Kevin Clash first start doing the voice of Elmo? Find out in this week’s “In Step With.”
