Jim henson used his moms coat to make kermit,

maybe polar fleece?

i would suggest you read thru the puppet forum here, several people have started making thier own Kermits, i would imagine just about all your questions have been answered in those Threads,

try your local fabric store, or wal mart, i got some polar and furry fleece from wal mart alot cheaper then a fabric store
