Don't know if this was ever discussed but I read somewhere he was fired before he died.

Do we know why that happened?

I don't know about the firing, but in Caroll Spinney's book, he mentions that there was some tension between he and Stone. That's too bad, but it certainly doesn't show when watching those old episodes.
