Cool interview! Of course as a vocal music major, to me hearing a Muppet vocal director talk shop is just as exciting as hearing from a Muppeteer! Nice job!

...and yes, singers should ALWAYS smile (at least in the studio laying tracks) when singing! Not so much with the lips (as that distorts dipthongs and leads to tinny long e's - the hardest vowel to sing and sound good) but more an "inner smile" which raises the soft palette resulting in a purer sound.

Yes, total geekdom when it comes to this stuff!
