Ahhh yes... those little scum sucking monkeys that take adventage of DVD's being out of print and selling them for whatever the shell they can just because no one's stopping them.

You know what I mean. When you look for a DVD on Amazon, and it's out of print and a used copy can cost you 30 bucks, because someone got them out of the bargin bin for 6 bucks?

I was looking for a copy of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie from Japan, which i could have got 3 years ago for 7 bucks (but due to a difficult time financially, I couldn't buy it) and a used copy ranged up to 70 bucks. These freaking buttheads are taking advantage of these greedy little companies that let things go out of print because they don't sell a billion of them in a week. I hate them so much.

So, how hoave they crushed your dreams?

I missed the chance to buy "Snow White" when it was released on DVD a few years ago. Today, the price of an official "Snow White" DVD is usually way more than it was originally selling for. So people certainly are taking advantage of the fact that it's so hard to find. Frankly, although I'd like a copy, I think I'm going to wait a few more years for the re-release on DVD (or whatever format we have by then).

This phenomenon is true in the music CD world as well. There are some out-of-print CDs that sell for way more than an average disk. It definitely is a turnoff. It works out best when you can find something you want at a reasonable price, but it doesn't always work that way.

I've bought used things off Amazon, and often had to pay through the nose, because the items were "rare and OOP." Example:

A few years back, I was looking for a copy of Sam Peckinpah's great western Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. At the time, it was only available on VHS, and even the tapes were oop. So through their sellers, Amazon was selling used copies. The lowest copy available was $39.95, and was marked "like new." I think the highest cost something like $99.95. It was still a used item, but marked "collectible"...which was weird, because the seller said it was a former rental copy. Anyway, after debating, I broke down and paid $39.95, plus s&h for the tape. I get it, it plays fine...and then less than a year later I find out Warner is coming out with a Peckinpah boxed set containing a 2-disc SE of Pat Garrett! In the end, I ended up purchasing the boxed set. The punchline? The boxed set ended up costing only a few dollars more online than the price I paid for a used tape.

I haven't really had any bad luck with buying OoP DVDs 'cause there haven't really been any that I was looking for.

But I am fortunate that I found some DVDs like Snow White and Beauty and the Beast when I thought they were OoP.

And of course I treasure my Transformers G1 DVDs because I was smart enough to ask for those for gifts when they were in print.

I saw sonic Jam for like 99 bucks the other day. It's in no a in print anymore. But as far as Cd's go, you just have to know where to look. There's just too many factors to look at where you're talking about those.

I paid around 70 dollars for each part (2 altogether) of the first season of GI Joe a few years ago. That hurt the pocketbook, but. . .I needed it, and had no other options. Also, I almost paid a similar amount for the Transformers G1 cartoon, as well, but instead found a sweet (and licensed) Chinese import, that had nearly 100 episodes, plus the (cartoon) movie, a key chain, some post cards, and a tin case, for 50 dollars (!). It was a sweet deal. . .

. . .I have to comment, though, that while I understand your frustration, this is a market issue. Its simple supply and demand. Don't hate the seller, hate the game (capitalism).

But I still think there's no call in charging multiple times for something just cuz some idiot at the company decided not to keep something in print, not even for archival purposes. And then if it goes up on Youtube, who do you think is the first one to pull it down?

I will say these guys are taking advantage of a crappy situation, especially since most of these people buy the DVD's when they were on clearance, and turn around selling it for exorbitant prices.

Oh, and BTW, Sony has the rights to release GI Joe now, so they might just rerelease those ones. Emphisis on Might.

Ugh... I run into these types mainly in music. The Frog Prince for $50? $99 for At Home with Bert and Ernie? Yeah, give me one reason why these albums should go for that much. Everyone is always up everyone's butt to "support the artist" and buy the CD. "Don't pirate! Buy the original! It's still copyright even if out of print!" Well just how much of that $70 for Old Brown Ears is Back do you think the Henson family is seeing? Do you think any of the $140 one idiot wants for Sesame Road is actually going to Sesame Workshop?

Makes me sick...

Which copy? The CD? Is it that out of print?

Yeah, you'd think to combat Piracy that they'd keep movies and stuff in print. Makes my 30 dollars needed to buy that sonic DVD seem like nothing. Still wanna punch these guys in the snoot, though.
