Wow!! I remember I had a lazy-eye fixed when I was two. (about)...
I remember waking up and my eyes were taped shut and I couldn't see anything. To this day I am terrified of hospitals etc. It's wierd, but hey, it just goes to show how childhood trauma can affect a person. Remember though that this was twenty-four years ago and I'm sure they are a lot better working with kids now.
Does your condition have a name? I've worked with some kids who've had conditions like cerebral palsy and brain damage, and I spent about about a week helping out a kid that had treacher-collins syndrome - it can affect eyes, hearing, etc. From what I understand, it's a genetic condition (that is, it's passed in the information that a person gets from his or her parents). For the record, the kid I worked with had no ears and had a hearing aid that sent the sound through the bones behind where his ear should be. He also had breathing problems when he was younger and also had very thick coke-bottle glasses. He was 10 (this was in 1997ish) but very intelligent.
Of course, it _is_ ironic that here I am, somone who is deathly afraid of hospitals etc, doing respite care work with special-needs kids.
Anyway, I hope everything goes well for you. I'm sure that everyone here will be thinking about you.
