Ok so heres the idea. My friend and I are setting up a studio for music production in my basement. My alias is Cantus for music making for obvious reasons  We wanna build the basement to look like the fraggle rock set. After much hunting I have figured out the plants, moss, lighting etc but we are at a loss for how to create the most important part....the rocks. Now obviously they aren't really huge boulders but does any1 have any idea how they were made to look so realistic? My gf mentioned using some sort of foam we could cut and paint but I figured Id ask here cause if any1 would know u all would  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

MinstrelCantus you should check the Fraggle Rock special on how its made on the first season boxed set bonus features. Jim Henson answers it there. Also when you are done please post a pic on photobucket.

Well I watched the entire disc of bonus features even the bit on design and none of it mentioned how to create the scenery. They went into great detail about the puppets and who did the landscape but never got around to sayin how they were made really.... My gf still thinks foam and sponge painting but as for now Im still on the lookout for any ideas. Thanks again for the reply tho regardless! Some good ideas on that dvd just not exactly what I was lookin for.

Its made of either foam or plastic. i say foam but you should study the scenery to make sure.

I made this intresting rock like dragon scuplt before using some grinded up newpaper. NOw, i can't tell you what it was called, because its been 10 years since i've seen it. And i havn't used it since. But i'm sure any art supply store will carry it. All i know, is its shredded news paper, shredded to the tiniest little shreds. You'd mix it with paper mache paste, and it gives a really good rock like texture. I tried searching for it myself to get the name for you, but i didn't have any luck. Like i said, check out an art supply store and they should know what it is

Its a good idea you have MinstrelCantus. The rocks have to be of a wide veriety so as to create different scenes and be movable.

MinstrelCantus on the Fraggle Rock 3rd season boxed set there is Production Design (12:34) – Michael Frith describes the inspiration for the show from personal events. Attention is also given to the complex set designs for the Fraggles, Doozers and Gorgs. Interviewed are: Michael Frith (Conceptual Designer), Lawrence Mirkin (Producer) and Bill Beeton (Production Design). That should help you build the set.

Michael Frith said that to make the rocks they inflated garbage bags and covered them in foam painted to look loke rocks. MinstrelCantus that should help you.
