I've tried that, but you're correct, the glue just doesn't sand well and is hard to cut. If you have a textile store near you, ask them about foam bolsters. I get the ten inch ones and cut my heads out of them. I know it's a project to find sheet foam that is thick enough for carving one piece heads, so I found that these are a perfect alternative. They're round, but large enough to make a one piece head from.
Today I bought a second hand electric bread knife for virtualy nothing. I wanted to try it out first. And it works great! perhaps in the future I'll go look for a new one though because this one heats up rather quickly. I used it together with a pair of scissors to make a small test sculpture in just under half an hour. And the result was beyond my expectations. But I have one small problem with smoothing out the surface of the foam. I've tried various grades of sanding paper. But they all tear the foam instead of removing all the irregularities.
Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
edit: I just read that you can also use a dremel for sanding, guess I'll try that first then
Shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you a picture of what I use and the sandpaper. It's easier to show you than describe it. The Dremel I only use for the detail work, not the regular sanding.
