US First Lady Michelle Obama is to appear in the first episode of the 40th anniversary series of Sesame Street.

Mrs Obama will appear on 10 November in a segment encouraging children to grow their own food and eat healthily.

Earlier this year, Mrs Obama - who has introduced a vegetable patch at the White House - launched a campaign to help tackle America's obesity problem.

Ricky Gervais and actresses Cameron Diaz and Eva Longoria-Parker will also guest on the new season.

Mrs Obama will show Sesame Street residents how to plant tomato, cucumber and lettuce seeds.

"All these seeds need to grow are sun, soil and water," she says in the episode.

"If you eat these healthy foods, you're going to grow up to be big and strong like me.

"I know you're going to like these vegetables because, in addition to being healthy, they really taste great."

She has previously visited the show's set to film a public service announcement to promote her healthy eating campaign.
