Anyone have any idea why there would be a picture of this in the blue box, when it came in the red curtain-designed one?

Originally the Chef's Kitchen came out in a red box as a part of series 3. So did the Mega Beaker. When Target picked up the line with series 4-6, the Chef's Kitchen and Mega Beaker were repackaged in blue boxes for Target stores so that the packaging would match series 4-6.

Likewise, last year's Muppet Christmas Carol PVC sets were released in red boxes for Barnes and Noble Stores and were sold in blue boxes for other retailers.

K, that makes sense... if it was picked up with the later series, the packaging would need to be in sync with it

Any collectors on this forum hardcore enough to try to get one in each type of box?

Some actually have. Those are usually the same collectors that have to sell everything because they spent too much money on their collections.

FYI, the Chef in the blue box has arms that are harder than the Chef in the red box, or so I've heard. Why? No idea, but I do have a blue box Chef and a red box chef and the blue box Chef does indeed have arms made from harber plastic.

I'm quite a serious collector but I don't think I'd buy both versions just for a box change, If I had the money I probably would but if that were so I'd buy about 3 sets of each series!

That's neat how they did the box change. Of course, I like the red packaging better, and I was fortunate enough to get a red one from eBay. Same thing with the Christmas Carol PVCs, we were lucky to find 'em at Barnes and Noble (and they were cheap too  )

I think the Chef set looks really good in the red box because of all the browns and wood colors in the set. plus the red and white tile. It matches nicely. I'm hoping the back stage comes in a red box, but I doubt it will.

Yeah, I don't think the Back Stage will come in the red, since everything is now in the blue. Another reason why I liked the red over the blue (referring to the Swedish Chef that is) is because it shows all the Series 3 figures, not just the Chef.

The red packaging is much better and it looks more unusual because lots of packaging for various products is that blue kind of colour these days. I liked it better when they had photos of the actual characters on the packaging rather than just photos of the figures, I think they've stopped putting photos of the figures now am I right? I don't even take that much notice at the boxes, its whats inside that counts!
