One thing I remember with fondness about SS was the number of cultural icons that made cameos.

Of course, the definition of cultural icon as opposed to pop icon is a little up for grabs - but generally pop icons aren't known well after 5 or 10 years. I also liked that the people they chose were from very diverse backgrounds and had very different things to offer.

Some that I remember:

Ralph Nader
Celia Cruz
Jean-Pierre Rampal
Ella Fitzgerald
(some of this gets fuzzy as to whether I'm remembering TMC as well)

Forgive my spelling...

I've always loved Lady Blacksmith Mombaza.

Oh - how could I forget - my ultimate favorite had to be Kofi Anan last season. "Do it the United Nations Way!"
