I know you probably all think I'm crazy for posting this being as Anti Elmo as I am. But the truth is, I used to like Elmo, back before Elmo's World and the Around the Corner Days. There are some good things I do remember about him back in the 80's and early 90's. Here's some funny things I remember.

In one of his very early appearances. He was sitting on the brown box next to Oscar's Can, and he had his pajamas on. He asked Oscar if he would give him a hug before he went to bed, and Oscar told him "NO!" Elmo started crying because he thought Oscar didn't like Elmo. Oscar comes out of his can and gives Elmo a big long hug, and says "Oscar does like Elmo" (This was probably one of the show's most touching moments)

Another one was also from his first year on the show and he was in Hooper's Store with David and Big Bird saying all the things he could do with a paper cup and he kept going on and on and on to the point where he put BB to sleep.

This next one was from the 1987-1988 Season and he kept bothering Oscar saying the word Cookie. Ernie's niece Ernestine even made an appearance in this episode (Gina was Babysitting her)

There was a time in 1991 when Elmo went into Oscar's Trash Can and pretended to be Oscar and kept popping up shouting "Gooooooo Away!" Oscar got upset because he wanted his can back.

How about the rest of you? Is there anything with Elmo from the old days that you actually like?

Well, first off, I still like Elmo. I mean, seriously, let's not get upset at a felt piece of cloth. It's not Elmo's fault the position he's been thrust into- it's an unfortunate marketing strategy on the part of Sesame Workshop. But anyway, I suppose some of the main Elmo moments I remember from 1980s and early 90s are one of my favorite songs "Do De Rubber Duck". True, Elmo is only seen in hamper, but he is there, along with Biff, The Count, Gladys, Ernie, Guy Smiley, Telly, Oscar and Kermit and Bert. Also, there's a song where Maria and Luis are in a musuem arguing over whether pictures are enormous or tremendous or whether they're tiny or itsy bitsy. And then Gordon and Susan suddenly pop out of the Egyptian sarcophaguses on the wall and start singing and Telly pops out of the Mona Lisa, Elmo pops up out of a suit of armor and Bob breaks from his "man with the world on his shoulders" pose and joins in.
It seems that was more Elmo's role in the older days. He had cameos in parts of songs and wasn't a major star at that point. He was used in skits and such, yes, but he wasn't dominating the show, as he seems to now.

One other Elmo-specific skit I remember is when he and Robin Williams discussed what you can do with a stick. That one is cool!

Otherwise, I really can't recall too many other Elmo skits or songs from the good old days in the 80s.

I like the old Elmo skits he did with Kermit. You know sort of like Kermit/Grover skits? Here are some of my favorites...

* Newsflash: Kermit is asking kids about games they invented, and Elmo claims he invented the "Reporter Game", in which he starts trying to take over Kermit's microphone and be the new reporter for Sesame Street News. It was really funny as they start fighting over it, and finally Elmo says into "This is Elmo of Sesame Street News...Elmo say BUH-BYE!", looks to Kermit "Say buh-bye Green Frog!", Kermit: "Buh-bye!"
* I don't remember this one quite too clearly, but it had to do with Kermit trying to mail a package, and Elmo just HAD to help, but he kept getting in Kermit's way. Finally when Elmo does help by getting out of Kermit's way, the post office closes.
* Kermit tries to do a lecture on happy and sad, but Elmo keeps wanting him to play with him. Everytime Kermit says yes, Elmo's gets all super happy, but when Kermit says "Not right now", then Elmo bursts into tears. Kermit finally realizes that Elmo has unknowingly helped him demonstrate happy and sad, so they play tag.

These are non-Kermit moments, but I still like them anyway...
* A really frizzy Elmo sings "One Fine Face" with Ernie.
* An episode where Gina baby-sits Elmo, but Elmo has his own agenda to avoid whatever Gina tries to get him to do (i.e. take a bath, then go to bed, etc, etc)
* An episode where Elmo wants to be just like The Count, and tries to find ways to make the "ka-boom ka-boom" after his counting.
* "We're All Monsters" song.

I'll think of some more later!

Those are really good moments with Elmo. Some of my other favorite "Classic" Elmo moments include his appearances in the songs One Fine Face and We're All Monsters. I also like him in the video Play-Along Games and Songs.

My favorite "classic" Elmo moment is during Luis and Maria's wedding when he was the ring bearer. During the wedding everyone is having thoughts set to music and whenever the camera was on Elmo he'd be singing in his head "Don't drop the rings Elmo, don't drop the rings!" and then when it was time he hands them to Bob and says "Don't drop the rings Bob" I just thought it was cute.

I do believe I remember those! I had forgotten about Kermit interacting with Elmo, which is almost kind of funny to think about, but I guess they were on Sesame Street together for a while.
There's one other Elmo sketch I like (and I'm not sure when this one comes from), but there's one where Elmo is in training to be a singing telegram like Grover and Grover is training him and both of them wind up harassing Fat Blue. It's awesome!

It is pretty funny to think of Elmo and Kermit together, since Elmo is someone we identify the current Sesame Street with, and Kermit is a charachter we identify Classic Sesame Street with. I guess there were only a handful of years they were on the show together. But I'm glad they got to interact when they did. It's funny you mention that skit about Elmo trying to take Kermit's Microphone and take over his News Report, because of the fact Kermit isn't really there anymore, and we don't see his Newsflashes anymore, but 15 minutes of the show is Elmo's World. I'm not complaining, I just think it's ironic how that skit seems like it was somewhat foreshadowing the future, when at the time nobody even knew what was to come. Scary
