What kind of plays could Sesame Street's Monsterpiece Theater have done if it were still a regular sketch. Let's find out with 'Death Of A Salesman'.
(cue 1991-1995 MT opening)
Cookie: Hello, and welcome once again to Monsterpiece Theater. Tonight, we proud to present one of the greatest plays ever written. 'Death Of A Salesman', by Arthur Miller. And now, 'Death Of A Salesman'.
(Play starts out in Grover's home. Grover has just returned home and is not happy)
Grover: Oh boy, oh boy. I can't believe this happened to me.
Zoe: What's wrong, dear?
Grover: I was fired today.
Zoe: Don't joke me!
Grover: I'm not joking, dear. I really did get fired.
Zoe: How awful. Do you know why they fired you?
Grover: No. It happened for no apparant reason at all.
Zoe: My special dinner I made just for you will make you feel better. (Zoe gives Grover the dinner) Actually, I better call the kids for dinner. (Zoe goes into the doorway) Kids, dinnertime! (Ernie and Bert come rushing downstairs)
Bert: How was your day, Dad?
Grover: Don't remind me.
Zoe: You dad was fired today.
Ernie: Oh, well that's too bad. Now you know how I feel when I lose something. (Ernie then lets out his trademark laugh)
Grover: I don't know what I'm going to do.
Zoe: You could look for another job.
Grover: Are you kidding? Finding a new job is so hard to do these days. I wish I could just drop dead. (At that moment, Grover grabs his chest and falls to the floor)
Zoe: Honey?
Ernie: Dad?
Bert: Dad? (Zoe checks for a heartbeat)
Zoe: Oh, dear.
Bert: What's wrong?
Zoe: I think he's dead.
Ernie: Was it something he said?
Zoe: Maybe. (Play ends, and we fade back into Allistair Cookie's chair)
Cookie: And there you have it. 'Death Of A Salesman'. Me hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. (MT music starts) We hope you will join us again next week. Until then, this is Alistair Cookie saying good night for Monsterpiece Theater. (End sketch)
