"That's eight! Eight episodes in a row! Ah-ah-ah!"
[SFX: maniacal laughter, thunder and lightning]
Do any of you remember a string of eight consecutive episodes in which the letter X was a sponsor? I personally saw that on TV at the end of the "two letters/one number" years (though the exact date escapes me). I wonder what the producers were thinking before those shows aired: "Hey, Boss, we have a whole closet full of old 'letter X' clips; want us to show them all before they get retired?"
By the time I'd seen the whole thing, I was starting to daydream about a protest fanscript:
Visualize the street being terrorized by a giant Muppetized X; the letter has scars on its "body", and a face that suggests Frankenstein's monster. "I'm not just a letter of the DAY," it sneers evilly; "I'm your letter for ETERNITY! Bwahahaha!"
Most major characters in the cast band together to defend the show from Evil X's continual interruptions of any clip it doesn't like--whether it teaches letters or not. Unfortunately, this X has even worse manners than a certain animated cowboy and won't take no for an answer. Finally, a mad-scientist Muppet (possibly Nobel Price?) hastens to the scene: he presses some buttons on a control device, "powering down" the X. As the scientist dismantles his creation, the Count watches and counts: "One, two, three, four! Four frightening parts!" He then helps the scientist pack the control and letter-pieces into a large black case with a lock.
Shortly afterwards, the theme-song instrumental plays in the background; our heroes announce the "sponsors" to the hidden audience.
Scientist: Sesame Street was brought to you by the letter--
Cast Member Crowd [terrified, in unison]: NO!!! Don't SAY it again!
Scientist [sheepishly]: Sesame Street was SUPPOSED to be brought to you today by the letter H...
Count: ...As in "Help!"
Scientist: And the letter O...
Count: As in, it's "Over"!
Scientist: ...And by the--wait, Count, you should do this part... [possible outtake, if this fanscript actually aired ]
Count: And by the fabulous number 4!
[Fade to Barkley/kids end credits.]
Why did I pick those sponsors? Well...
The H clip with the mad scientist came to mind as a story tie-in; so did Bert's broken-TV sketch (constant repetition...)
The O is an in-joke allusion to Cowboy X's "reform" in a classic cartoon.
And the 4 reminded me of rude interruptions, with the "fiddler/four lions" cartoon.
