I vaguely can recall one Don Music segment that went like a usual one, only it was someone other than Kermit assisting him in getting the song done. Does this ring a bell with anyone, or am I imagining it?

I've read that Buster helped Don write a song once. And Don Music has made appearances without Kermit. In one of them, he was a contestant on Guy Smiley's game show Mystery Guest.

Well... There was the one time Don Music was composing a song with the help of Simon the Sound Man instead of Kermit.
And there's also The American Revolution sketch where Don plays Thomas Jefferson, having a tough time penning the Declaration of Independence because he has nothing to write with... Until Mr. Grover tries to help out in his own inimitable fashion.

Another time Don Music was without Kermit was the re-opening of Cooper's, no Stooper's, or was it Drooper's...no wait I've got it Hooper's Store (a little Big Bird humour there folks ), after Biff and Sully accidently busted the place with one hit of the hammer.

Ooh, I remember that! They had to rebuild the store and that when it got a new sign.

Don was in Hooper's Store earlier than that in the late 80's. The scene opens with David telling Don that when he said he wanted to add some music to the store, he didn't mean for him to bring his whole piano inside. Undaunted, Don plays a lot of lame songs about David preparing and cooking food. David is exasperated and says that all he had in mind was a little transistor radio.

I've only seen this skit inserted randomly into unrelated street plots, but I get the feeling that it might have originally been part of a larger story.

Yes... Know what segment you're talking about GB. Me thinks it's in Episode 2407, which I have on video. You can probably get it from the more veteran SS traders here on the boards.

Don't forget Don also sang the song Flabergasted with Buster the Horse during the 1985-1986 Season.

I love that song! It always pops into my head every now and again.
