Did John Denver get contacts or something?

In both John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Togetehr and John Denver's appearance on The Muppet Show, John Denver had glasses. However, in Rocky Mountain Holiday, he didn't wear glasses, except for during the flashback sequences. So did John Denver get contact lenses around the time of that special (I think the flashbacks were supposed to take place a year earlier or close, so why contradict a flashback because he currently wasn't wearing glasses?)? Or did he get some sort of eye surgery, which allowed him to get better vision? Or did he just choose not to wear his glasses for that special?

I would think he might have had something done especially since he was seen driving without glasses, and I would expect driving without glasses to be dangerous (unless one didn't need glasses). Then again, he did seem to have trouble reading Miss Piggy's letter that was given to him.
